Has anyone used bitters to help their thyroid/liver situation? I'm currently eating a bit if gentian root daily.
There is a study that stated bitter taste receptors regulate thyroid function, which are of course activated by bitter compounds.

Never heard of bitters
No, but that’s interesting.
Chris Kresser writes positively about Swedish Bitters for improving digestion.
My herbalist friend told me bitter foods make us produce more bile so our food is better digested, hence nasty tasting medication helping us feel better. I’ve since opted for more bitter tasting salad leaves & more herbs in my food.
Yeh bitters definitely enhance our digestion! From the multiple studies I have read there are bitter receptors located throughout the body. I believe since the advent of agriculture we have bred these bitter properties out of our plant foods, thus negatively affecting our physiology upon their consumption.
I think if bitters are incorporated into our daily diet we can potentially mitigate some of our hormonal imbalances. Well at least that would be the goal.
I've been able to control my sweet tooth taking gentian root and effectively feel more 'leveled' out. I plan to do keep up this regiment for the next few months to see if my situation continues to improve.
Though my thyroid labs appear to be normal I have classic hypothyroid symptoms, including brain fog, sparse outer eyebrows and increased hair shedding. I'll post my labs here soon.
