Thyroidectomy and calcium

There are sometimes posts or replies on the merits or demerit of calcium supplements. However, treatment for all thyroid conditions is not the same. People who have had thyroidectomy often need calcium as well as vit D3. Whether from food or supplements we all need sufficient calcium in our bodies.

There is some research suggesting people who've had total or partial thyroidectomy for cancer are at increased risk of osteoporosis. It could be wise to ask for a DEXA scan to monitor for future problems. This is offered routinely in some areas of the UK and not in others.

Please do not stop taking calcium that you have been prescribed as your thyroid condition may be different from other people's.
