Introduction of T3

Have been reading recent posts of others who have recently been started on liothyronine meds. My Endo reduced my levo from 125 to 75 mcg a week ago and prescribed me 20 mcg of T3 which I started immediately.I have felt so unwell this week with severe headaches and severe fatigue whereby I have had to lie down several times a day and sleep. I was just about to stop taking the T3 until I read these helpful posts. I will now introduce the T3 more slowly and see if that helps.

Endos don't have a clue about adding T3. Mine tells me their is a protocol she must follow. I haven't yet explained to her how wrong that protocol of reduce levo by 50mcg and add 20mcg in one go is! Which is unusual for me as I am mouthy.

That’s too much T3 too soon ...and unless your Ft4 was significantly over range perhaps too much of a reduction in levothyroxine as well

Suggestion

Initially 5mcg T3 as single dose.....or can even cut into 2 x 2.5mcg (speck of dust) . Only reducing Levo by 12.5mcg

After week, add second 5mcg dose T3 and reduce levothyroxine by another 12.5mcg

Hold at this for 6 weeks and retest

Or can add in another 5mcg after 2 weeks

Then add last 5mcg

Then retest 6-8 weeks later

Personally I would retest after only adding 2 x 5mcg and wait 6-8 weeks before testing

Your vitamin D was a bit low in previous blood test

Thank you for this. My T4 was about 27.

So you did need to reduce levothyroxine....keep close eye on Ft4 over coming months, if it drops too low you may need to increase levothyroxine back up a bit

Exactly as predicted.....Ft4 is now very likely dropping too low
