Could anyone please advice me as to whether it is o.k for Hashimoto's people to take hydrocortisone tablets for a mouth ulcer ?

Hello friends,

I have a small (sort of) ulcer in my mouth, just under my lip, and it's been there for a few weeks now. It came on after a strong bite into my lip.... It isn't uncomfortable or painful, but when I showed it to my doctor, he made no comment, just produced the tablets, which apparently attach themselves to the ulcer and dissolve in the mouth slowly. These are to be taken three times a day for 5 days.

I'm just a little wary about taking hydrocortisone internally,( as it belongs to the group of medicines called corticosteroid)!

So if anyone can give me some advise I would appreciate it. Or indeed any natural product which may help?

Thank you so much fr any advice !!!

Hydrocortisone is one of the drugs mentioned on a levothyroxine info leaflet as one of the medications. that could affect how levo works.

Thanks for your reply Lalatoot,.

However I'm not on Levothyroxine. I'm on NDT, and I don't think it's mentioned on their leaflet. But I am hypo at present as my adrenals are under par.

So I don't really want to make either my thyroid or my adrenals any worse.

I'm just hoping someone may know of a natural product to help.

Thanks once more.

My father used to rub them with bicarbonate of soda made into a paste with water.

Ooh ! That's sounds worth a try. A lot of the old remedies were very successful and did the job !!

Thank you !

Hello there C70rol,

I used to get frequent mouth ulcers, usually one at a time, then I found that putting a B12 tablet in my mouth right by the ulcer worked well. Sometimes I used liquid B12 applied with a dropper several times a day. I'm now ulcer-free since taking 3 vitamin B complex tablets daily. You might have to experiment with the number and strength of the tablets. I seem to have just a little bit more energy too, since taking the whole B complex tablets. I hope this is useful information, ulcers suck!

Thank you for your reply. - it's very very rare that I get an ulcer, and I'm very regular in taking my B complex and B 12 supps. But my adrenals and thyroid are not optimal so I'm sure that would have been contributory ! According to my dentist the tooth bite was quite deep and would have filled up with fluid from my Saliva glands. - so it's not the usual type of ulcer.

At the time of doing the 'bite', I was holding a family get together. It was manic , for me that is,

I' m not going to do that again, as apart from th number of people, and a big family argument. I was shattered for a couple of weeks afterwards !!

Thank you for your thoughtful advice

Are you sure they're HydroCortisone? I've never heard of that being prescribed for mouth ulcers before. HC is for adrenal insufficiency and you have to be careful how you take it. What strength is it?

Hi Greygoose, yes, they are :- Hydrocortisone 2.5mg muco-adhesive Buccal Tablets. I'm assuming they been prescribed because I've had this small lump for a month.

A day or so before going to the doctor I happened to have a check up at the dentist and when he looked at the lump he said he thought the 'tooth bite' had probably filled up with fluid from the salivary glands!! .......It certainly isn't what I would say is an ulcer. As I say there is no pain and no discomfort,,and is quite firm.

Thank you so much for your help, I'm just so unsure about using Hydrocortisone ??

Well, it's only a tiny dose. And the name muco-adhesive Buccal Tablets sounds as if you're not supposed to swallow them.

Hey just wondering how you got on with these? Ive just been given them today but for the life of me cant get them to stick to the ulcer I have, accidentally swallowed the last one pretty much whole! Nightmare!!
