What were the test results, plus reference ranges, that the reduction was based on? If you don't have the results, ask the receptionist at your surgery for a print out.
If you post your test results , plus reference ranges (these are important as they vary from lab to lab) then we can help. For a full picture we need to see:
That's very strange. Are you in the UK, that's often the only thyroid test that's done, then FT4 can be done if TSH is out of range, with FT3 not very often at all.
If you are in the UK then they can't refuse to give you your results as they will be breaking the law, we are legally entitled to them under the Data Protection Act and the European General Data Protection Regulation.
Yes, I gained steady over the past 3 yrs after thyroidectomy and not 1 of the 7 Endos I’ve seen in 3 yrs thinks that my weight gain is from my thyroid medication or thyroid levels ...... I did this to myself and it didn’t matter that I exercised 6 days a week for 2hours a day and worked with nutritionalist who felt my food/exercise was spot on...... still it was something I did.
I too have put on 3 stone since my thyroidectomy. And having the same argument with my doctors as they say same and I have only cut down on bad bits rather than upped and still not an ounce lost!
I've come out of there many times in tears.
Ive always struggled with exercise and having an extra 3 stone too has not helped me and have suffered when trying to do gentle exercises. Just a vicious circle!
Hi, What issues do you have that make exercising difficult now?
In my opinion Endos/GPs don't care about weight gain after thyroidectomy they are not in the business of understanding the effects that thyroidectomy has on metabolism all they understand is "Lab Numbers" and as long as those labs are in the range (everyone has a theory of what range is best) Endos/GPs don't subscribe to the theory conspiracies of best place to be in your lab range (If they did this conversation wouldn't exists) ......However if you were losing weight after Thyroidectomy you better bet you bottom dollar you would get every appropriate lab test needed in order to figure out why and you probably would recieve a medication adjustment without the "tsk-tsk-tsk" you did this to yourself finger pointing like us gainers get constantly, I'm sure others will disagree with me but in my opnion of a 3 yr fight endos don't care about me and my ever mounting health issues and weight gaining after thyroidectomy simply because my labs fall into normal range (normal ranges based on people with a thyroid) probably a million explanation about how my lab numbers (because of thyroid meds) are to be compaired with lab ranges made from those with a thyroid...still seems wrong. Oh well.
I have been on 100mg, 75mg, 100/75mg alternate days and back on 100mg to see if it helps with weight all not to avail sadly.
Yes I agree with you, I have changed Endos and paid privately too, only to be told that I must be eating more.
I've tried various ways of eating other than Gluten/Keto etc so they maybe my next steps.
Exercise wise, everytime I try to start of doing gentle exercises and I mean gentle walking, or small movements in swimming pool with very little width/swimming - my muscles go into spasm and I have to spend £100's on Osteopath etc to release my body. I also get very breathless, sometimes just walking upstairs, I can't hold a conversation at the top.
They say I need to exercise (one GP said try Zumba - I don't think she quite listened to what I had said)(!! It seems to be a vicious circle for me as I can't exercise to the extent they say so can't lose weight. Have to be able to breath to exercise and then when I do try my body doesn't like it - Think it is allergic to it ;).
Im 53 and shouldn't be this way, even without exercising but no one seems to want to help me try and I go back to square 1 again.
I have the same issue breathless after mild activity and it comes and goes.
I stopped trying to diet since it just provoked a feeling of failure when I seem to gain not lose and I just started reducing my portions and light weight training. Eating is a chore anymore too I really don’t like doing it I’m never hungry.
I think the issue with thyroidectomy is the added strain of menopause it’s a double hormone nightmare and the Endos and GPS still don’t think this combo causes weight gain (menopause & thyroidless). Idiots.
I’ve been on 125mg, 112mg,100mg, 88mg, Armour thyroid 2 grains and 15 and now 10mg of cytomel.....and none of this budges the pudge and my health keeps getting worse.
I've been reduced from 150 to 125 too and I've put on weight and I just can't seem to lose it. Tried cutting carbs and having nil sugar - frustrated. I'm also on T3 (having to pay the earth to see a private specialist just to get my prescription, but I can't live without it) and I've recently had to reduce to 20mcg T3 from 25mcg to see how I go. Felt much better on 25. I've still got several hypo symptoms despite my blood tests saying I'm OK. Just been reading a very encouraging book called 'Recovering with T3'. So much of it is me all over, but I would need more T3 and less T4 by the looks of it and can't see my specialist agreeing to it - also cost puts me off. If only my doctor would go back to prescribing it. I wish I had answers for you!
