How Mercury can affect the thyroid.

I just found this article:

nahypothyroidism.org/is-exp...

It talks about the toxic effect of Mercury on the thyroid. Mercury is chemically similar to iodine and therefore "makes it's way" to the thyroid where it causes toxicity. And one of the most probably causes of exposure to Mercury is in teeth filling amalgams. This was of interest to me since I did have a few teeth filled a couple of years before I had my thyoid problem. I was offered a replacement of my mercury amalgams with a different material - but the thought of spending all of that time in the dentists chair was more than I could stomach. Anyway, I thought you might all be interested in it.

Hi LAHs

I have a condition (oral lichen planus) supposedly caused by a large amalgam filling which was improperly placed and caused a severe abrasion on my tongue. The consultant at the local hospital advised me to leave my amalgam fillings in place unless they needed replacement due to fracture or wear, just not to have any more as they could aggravate the lichen planus.

Apparently, removal of amalgam fillings is a complicated procedure which, unless properly done, leads to a greater risk due to the release of mercury fumes.

I therefore refuse to have any more amalgam fillings but I don't worry about the ones I have. A couple of small ones have been in place for nearly 50 years!

I have only had the lichen planus for 10 years due to the work of that atrocious dentist, and I was only diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2017 so cannot be sure if the mercury itself is really much to blame in my case.

Like you, and no doubt many others, I prefer to stay out of the dentist's chair as far as possible. Unfortunately my OLP means I have to brave it every six months for a checkup😟. Hope you are more fortunate!😊.

Best wishes

Caroline

I had a dentist whose fillings are now causing my teeth to break off at each "corner" (I think they call a corner a pedestal). I needed to go and see him last year, reluctantly because one of my teeth had a corner broken off. I found his practice closed down. He had a very rich clientele, (I was not one of the rich ones) and I think he must have got sued by one of the rich guys because every time one of those pedestals breaks off it's about $2000 to crown the tooth. Oh and he had started to refuse insurance - which would have wiped me out anyway.

That’s awful! I’m so sorry you’ve had all that trouble with your teeth. Since leaving that one dentist who placed the bad filling causing my OLP, my dental treatments have been good and relatively trouble free. I just hate going🙁. I hope you’ve found a better dentist now.

Best wishes

I decided two years to have my fillings out and replaced. It was done over two sittings. I wouldn’t say it had improved my symptoms but it was very expensive.

My dentists thought it wasn’t necessary but was happy to take them out. It’s cost me £1200 .
