Hello lovely people..Me again with a question: Do shoulders tend to get tensed because of thyroid issues or perhaps its spiritual as I noticed constantly but unconsiously I lift my shoulders and they are hurting on top of the shoulders.

These two articles could be of interest :

Also, I wrote about muscle issues for someone else today, and the same comments I made in that reply apply to muscle tension in the shoulders :

There is a possibility that low calcium could be implicated in muscles that don't relax, but it is not a good idea to supplement calcium unless you've had your levels tested and it has come back low in range or below range. If it is below range or very low in range then you need to see a doctor for investigation, because it isn't common (or, to be more precise, it isn't common on this forum) and is possibly very serious. Look up hypocalcaemia :

Please note that I'm not a doctor and I have no medical training, so you follow my suggestions at your own risk, and must do your own research.

“These tender points are caused by abnormal contractions in the muscular tissue that stays contracted over long periods of time causing changes in the fascia and potentiating pain.

In order to relieve the pain the tissue MUST relax, and in order for muscular tissue to contract, there must be enough energy in the form of ATP.

Remember that thyroid hormone is required for proper ATP production”

I had frozen shoulders in both left and right. Dr said it was frozen shoulder but I believed it was because I had hypothyroidism. I found out later that I’m a very poor converter T4 toT3. It took some time but once on T3 medication all my symptoms went.

Oh lord!! This is me.

I am constantly reminding myself to push my shoulders back/down.

My main struggle has been and still is muscle weakness. I’m losing muscle like mad. For example, before Xmas I could do squats (badly and not much and slowly!) but now I can barely push up to standing from crouching down. It terrifies me.

My whole body feels like my shoulders now - tight and my muscle will cramp or tremble under the slightest pressure.

I’m clinging onto the idea that once I’m dosed correctly it’ll stop. I really hope that’s the case.

Good luck 😉

I’m feeling exactly the same at the moment , pain in my upper shoulder blade up into my neck muscles , random pain in all areas of my body, I reduced my T3 in November from 18.75 to 12.5 as my T3 was way over range and I was having palpitations, don’t know what is worse ?????

Yes ..in fact frozen shoulder is now cited in some books as a symptom. Years ago in early 80s I had really bad frozen shoulder - could hardly raise my arm above shoulder height.

Doctor said it was Thyroid related talk to the hospital. Hospital said it was nothing to do with thyroid talk to your doctor!!

I then went to a self help group and asked if anyone had a sore shoulder (...nearly every hand went up - or as high as they could get it)

I got successful treatment from osteopathy and acupuncture though it may have improved as thyroid improved too. Good luck.

Apart from the implications of being hypothyroid the main issue (and also one of the causes of going hypothyroid in the first place) is the tension created by unresolved emotions, past and current stress in your life and possible traumas. If you want to find more how it all works your best resource is dr John Sarno's books especially his "The Mindbody Prescription" or his YouTube lectures.
