Mirena, hypothyroidism + menopause. Good or bad. Also advice on MSD please.

I am wondering if anybody has any advice re Mirena coil, hypothyroidism and menopause? I’ve had four Mirenas since my son was born. Have been told there are links between Mirena and thyroid dysfunction. I’m booked to have it removed next week but told it masks menopause symptoms so also anxious about that too. But feel au natural might be a better was to go. Any advice appreciated.

Also since becoming hypothyroid and commencing treatment 14 months ago, I have hip bursitis and Achilles tendinitis which is affecting me especially on a night (seeing physio) and a pre diabetes blood test, which I’m tackling with a great Our Path (nhs) programme. Is this regular hypothyroid “stuff”? Feeling a tad despondent with it all but keen to try and sort it all out. Again any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Interesting you say there is a link,

I never knew that!

I had a Mirena fitted in 2010 in NZ where I was working, along with having a womb abrasion for heavy bleeding and they gave me a transfusion too.

When I woke up I felt very unwell and unable to move easily. They told me I had probably just reacted to the transfusion and it would wear off. I remained poorly could hardly walk. 10 days later got a terrible rash all over my body, temp, they said a harmless virus from blood transfusion and nothing to worry about. They were dismissive and I felt really ill. I had to resign my job. I didnt get better after rash gone and got a sore on my forehead right at ‘third eye’.

Different GP’s treated me for everything attempting to get rid of it but wouldnt budge. It was awful ( looked like a big deep cold sore in middle of my forehead) and I thought was definitely going to scar if ever it did heal.

They tried everything and in end were testing me for Oesophageal cancer as was told was a symptom. Very worrying time.

I started believing it was something to do with the Mirena but the doctor didnt and wouldnt take it out.

I started praying to God to get rid of it and you wont believe but my body expelled it into the toilet!

My sore healed within hours like a miracle. They told me that I’d had a rare Acne Rosacea reaction to the Progesterone in the Mirena.

However my health never been same. And had virus after virus last few years including Shingles twice! and now I’m Hypothyroid x

A year ago you were under medicated and only in 50mcg Levothyroxine

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Presumably you had 25mcg dose increase and bloods retested 6-8 weeks later

What dose are you now on?

What were last test results?

Just testing TSH and FT4 is completely inadequate. Essential to test FT3 as well and all four vitamins

The aim of Levothyroxine is to increase the dose slowly in 25mcg steps upwards until TSH is under 2 (many need TSH significantly under one) and most important is that FT4 in top third of range and FT3 at least half way in range

NHS guidelines on Levothyroxine including that most patients eventually need somewhere between 100mcg and 200mcg Levothyroxine.

nhs.uk/medicines/levothyrox...

Also what foods to avoid (eg recommended to avoid calcium rich foods at least four hours from taking Levo)

All four vitamins need to be regularly tested and frequently need supplementing to maintain optimal levels

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3 £29 (via NHS private service )

monitormyhealth.org.uk/thyr...

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

For thyroid including antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
