Reducing T3

After feeling unwell , and seeing my Endo my T3 is too high 7.5 ( top of range 6.5 ) while taking 18.75 in split doses 12.5 with my 100mcg thyroxine in the morning and 6.25 early evening. Suffering from palpitations he has told me to reduce back to 12.5 how quickly should I feel better? These palpitations are horrible and scary.

T3 has a half life of 24 hours and stays in the cells for about 3 days. So by reducing your dose of T3 then any effects of overmedication should hopefully start to sort themselves out after a few days.

Are you splitting your 12.5mcg into two doses? This might be the best idea then you wont get a big "hit" of T3 which might happen if you took it all at once.

Hi can I just ask , as my T3 is very high , how quickly should my levels go back down now that I have reduced my dose ?

As I said, hopefully a few days due to the short half life of T3.

Reading previous posts....you had an operation recently

Anesthetic can significantly lower B12

What vitamin supplements do you currently take?

Have you had vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin tested since your operation?

I’m taking B12and a vitamin B complex , plus vitamin D with K spray and magnesium citrate , had to stop them before my operation and again for blood tests so will start them properly again , I will have my vitamins tested in about 6 weeks .

When adjusting dosage I always use small increments. If you have adjusted dosage before successfully use similar increments. If you haven't adjusted before go steady, too big a change all in one go can result in you going too far in the other direction. Keep a Thyroid diary. You may feel some improvement quite quickly but need to give your body 4 to 6 weeks to settle. Hope this helps

Thank you , I have decreased by 6.25 because my pills are too small to cut any smaller than that , hopefully I will feel better soon 🤞

My daughter has had a heck of a time absorbing her thyroxine. She has to split her does or she does not absorb it. Her palpitations have not ever ended. They are not constant but affect her most days. Her endo and and cardiologist have put her on Motoporil and she takes 20mcg daily and can take additional when the palpitations act up. It helps some during the episodes but is not a preventative measure that helps keep them away.

She currently takes 400mg Levo in the am and 400mg in the pm. This is after 2 years of getting injections weekly after oral did not work.
