Levothyroxine and periods

Hello all, looking for a little help. I've been on levothyroxine for 20 weeks and started on 50mg, then 75mg but now since I've been on 100mg my periods have stopped, I've missed two now and I'm normally regular, I'm 48 and not pregnant so could the medication be the reason ?

Thank you all in advance for your help

Ali

At your age I'd be more inclined to think you are peri-menopause and your periods are starting to become irregular which is very common.

Tbh that's what I was thinking, I have no other symptoms which is why I though I would ask. Let's hope it stays that way if it is 🙂🙂

I’m thinking menopause to be honest : ) If you are medicated correctly you could go from heavy periods to more manageable ones but if they’ve stopped completely then more like menopause. Your GP can do blood tests for testosterone and FSH to see how your levels are. Menopause can make symptoms worse or at least you feel worse and hormones are not balanced as there were which can affect thyroid.

Apart from menopause being the cause high cortisol can also stop periods (or lengthen the cycle / lighten the flow) which is quite possible alongside a thyroxine increase. If this was the case you’d probably also feel bad alongside this (or at least worse than before the raise).

You don’t mention if you feel good or bad after the increase. How do you feel?

I had a time when I missed 3 periods just from extreme stress. I’ve also had cycles of up to 48-60 days, which then returned to normal 28 days over time.

I'm all over the place, I started on methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine 4 weeks ago for RA too so I'm really confused. I have forgotten what it feels like to feel normal, I wouldn't say I feel any different from the dosage of levothyroxine though but it's hard to tell with everything else going on. I've always been 29 days on the dot 🤔

Peri menopause started off with short and heavy cycles and bad PMS - absolute nightmare - my iron levels must have plummeted around then; then, later, they became more spaced out and lighter which I preferred... I started getting other menopause symptoms too.

Supplementing magnesium can help with menopause symptoms - especially the night time aches, anxiety, palpitations, flushes, or insomnia. Some of these later symptoms do last, I'm afraid, but I have discovered that Magnesium keeps them to a minimum and I can stay awake at the right times!
