You follow the rules for taking hormones: start low and increase slowly.
With T3 that means starting with a 1/4 pill, added to your levo, and increasing by 1/4 pill every two weeks until you get to one whole pill. Then, hold for six weeks and retest.
An ordinary pill cutter should work very well for cutting them.
Ideally you should ALWAYS get test before starting on any T3
9 months ago is a long time
Have you tested vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
These are frequently too low and need improving by supplementing, preferably before adding T3
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
If/when also on T3, make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).
About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's.
If adding T3 best to start with 1/4 tablet (6.25mcg) or even 1/8th tablet
Easy to cut with sharp scalpel into 1/4's or 1/8's
Adding small dose of T3 waking and mid afternoon
Getting FULL Thyroid testing 6-8 weeks later
Pull cutters are not created equal. If you struggle to cut the pills in quarters with the one you've got, shop around. I'll see if I can find the details of the one I have that was recommended on the forum years ago.
Hello, my endo started me on a very low dose of T3 and has taken around three years to raise it up to 25mcg per day, which seems to be right, that's with no T4 at all. Hope that helps, it was very slow and steady but I gather the small dose and slow increase relates to your state at the start of treatment - the worse you are the smaller the starting dose and slower the increase. That said, there are always other views, this is only my experience.
