Hi pabhoo,
A thyroid nuclear scan is given in order to see how much iodine your thyroid absorbs as that provides information about the condition of the gland.
Here’s a link with a video and complete explanation of the procedure:

It is over very quickly and is not invasive. Hope this is helpful and wishing you all the best.
I didn't know there was different ones.... I actually see doc today to book appointment... I saw nurse practitioner other day and she made appointment for doc......
There are many sorts of scan.
Could be a simple ultrasound scan, the iodine uptake Greekchick explained, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan, or something else.
Most often, we receive a letter about it which should explain more.
I have never had one of those, just a couple of ultrasounds.
It could be ultrasound - they put jelly on your neck and the probe thing is run over the area and you will be told what they see (my consultant was quite forthcoming). It is up on a screen but pretty meaningless to jo public they might explain a few things to help. It is painless feels a tad cold which some would welcome in this heat 😂🤣😂 and easy so nothing to fear at all. As for other types of scan - others will have to explain them.
It is probably the ultra sound one where they put the jelly on your neck. If it is the nuclear one it's not as bad as it sounds. You have a radioactive injection in your arm then go back about 4 hours later for the scan, which is very boring as you have to lie still while the do the scan which will last for around 1 hour. Part way through there is another radioactive injection so they can check the uptake in your body. I had it done a few weeks ago on my parathyroids.
As you have Hashimoto's it's most likely an ultrasound....just jelly on neck scan with a hand held wand .....like you have when pregnant
I just got an ultrasound of mine. Took a couple of minutes.
As many have said above, the first scan is a simple ultrasound scan - absolutely nothing to worry about.
The is a nuclear scan, but that happens as the last link in the chain. If you have had cancer and a thyroidectomy (i.e. they removed your thyroid) then they give you this type of scan for reasons others have described above.
If you have not had a thyroidectomy, then your doc is talking about an ultrasound - do not worry about anything, you can have it done while planning dinner!
