Years ago was taking above until I read that a side effect was Atherosclerosis so I stopped. When I had to see Cardiologist re AF I asked him about these
side effects, never heard of them , said a Red Herring. I started to retake above again but not religiously, then 6months ago I found I had been prescribed Adcal-D3, when I enquired of the Chemist was told I must need it and of course when I saw the GP recently omitted to ask and know I must. Any information or thoughts please. How do I change my "user name" ? Thanks

If you take k2 with your d3, it ensures the calcium is deposited where it should be. I.e in the bones and teeth. There are 2 types k2 mk4, a synthetic type and k2 mk7 usually from a more natural source.
I see an excellent cardiologist, but if I ask any vitamin type question he either suggests it is all bumkum or is completely stumped. Their training doesn't usually cover such things.
Thanks for that. I could by hardly understand what he was saying and as he wouldn't face me made it worse. Nevermind, it's the sideffects that I want to find out about and I can't decide if I should take it or not. What do you think ?
I am not medically trained. But many with auto immune type conditions benefit from d3.
D3 also encourages take up of calcium, but some believe this could end up in inappropriate places in the body. That's where k2 comes in, as it supposedly directs any calcium towards the bones and teeth which is where it is required.
I could be as am still avoiding dairy apart from a little cheese as I had an oestrogen positive malignancy and was advised to go dairy free at the time and got used to not having it. I don't know if my calcium and vitD levels were looked at
As Adcal contains a little D3 and a lot of calcium - Calcium carbonate (750 mg) and vitamin D3 (200 I.U.) then one would assume it is only prescribed if calcium has been tested and found to be deficient. If a doctor prescribes this without testing calcium then, in my opinion, they are being negligent.
D3 aids absorption of calcium from food so unless there is a calcium deficiency shown when tested, the addition of calcium with a D3 supplement can do more harm than good.
Also, as mentioned by Overnightheatingloss, K2 is an essential cofactor of D3 as it directs the calcium to where it is needed (bones and teeth) and away from soft tissues and arteries where it can be deposited and cause problems, eg Atherosclerosis.
Lots of information about this if you Google, here's a scientific one from a reliable source
Also, 200iu D3 is such a minute amount it wont help raise a low level. The Vit D Council has lots of information, including how much D3 is required to raise levels
Doctors know very little about nutients and generally fail to understand that a low in range result can lead to symptoms and they often dismiss the value of supplements.
So really, its down to testing both. See what your Vit D level is and if necessary supplement with D3, at the dose recommended by the Vit D Council, and it's important cofactors (mainly K2 and magnesium).
