Hello All ! Im hoping somebody here can help me ! I was diagnosed with HyperThyroidism 6 weeks ago (prob had it for 10 months without knowing) and as I was very high (27) my endochronligist put me on *Carbimazolum* :

° 45mg of for 2 weeks ( loading dose )

° 30mg for 2 weeks

° 15mg 2 weeks

.. And now Im HYPO !

So i was told to continue on same med (??), but reduce to 10mg.

This doesn't make sense to me to stay on SAME medication , if now i have the opposite diagnosis.

Could somebody here kindly enlighten me ?

Thank you !

Una

What exactly was 27? The FT4? That's not a very high level. Or was it the FT3? Did your endo test any antibodies? What exactly was your diagnosis? Did they diagnose Grave's?

Firstly, what was 27? If it was your TSH, which, given that the upper value of the reference range is around 4.5, could be described as very high (although others do reach far higher than that); but that would imply HYPOthyroidism. If it was your FT4 that measured 27, that isn't "very" high as the upper value of the reference range can often be 22 but can also be 17 or 14, depending on the individual Lab. So, relatively speaking, 27 isn't very high, but is nevertheless elevated. That result 'might' indicate HYPERthyroidism, but because it's not that elevated, might instead indicate the after effects of an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland where damaged cells shed their thyroid hormones into the blood stream causing the levels to be temporarily elevated. This happens when you have Hashimoto's disease aka autoimmune thyroiditis aka autoimmune HYPOthyroidism. Graves' disease is the cause of most cases of hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's is the cause of most cases of hypothyroidism, and unfortunately there is a perversity amongst the medical fraternity which often causes them to not test the respective auto-antibodies yet nevertheless in the absence of the results, wrongly declare cases of hyperthyroidism to be Graves', and wrongly ignore Hashimoto's as the cause of hypothyroidism. Consequently it is not unknown for the presence of mildly elevated thyroid hormones to be wrongly diagnosed as hyper and not hypothyroidism. Hence firstly we need to know what measured 27, but also need the full results - TSH, FT4, FT3, and the respective antibodies; because if you are wrongly diagnosed you are then wrongly treated.

Thank you greygoose & Thank you MaisieGray for your very speedy replies !

It was the T4 that was 27 , one month ago. And TSH at 0.01.

And now after meds, T4 is at 6.7, and my TSH reference is at 21.

So Ive gone form HYPER to HYPO, im told, in 4 weeks....

ANd im continuing on the SAME medication , at min dose, but still I find this very unusual.

You need to insist on having your antibodies tested:

TRAB or TSI to see if you have Grave's

TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies to see if you have Hashi's - which seems more likely to me. Your FT4 wasn't high enough to be Grave's, but doctors don't understand that. If you have Hashi's, then carbi isn't the right treatment and you should be weaned off it.

My endo doc told me it was Grave's disease ! Gosh, I don't know now. I dont have copy of the original results of 1month ago, so I dont know if my antibodies were checked. Im gonna try get the doc's email and ask her and see.

Thank you so much for this precious information !! :)

MaisieGray , could you kindly give me your opinion , given that the following are my antibody results :

°TRAB : 9.2

°TG : 341

°ATI TPO : 144

Do you think it is still more likely that Im HYPO rather than HYPER ?

Thank you so much !!
