After 22 years have now come off medication

I was diagnosed over 22 years ago with underactive thyroid. It was a year after giving birth to my 2nd child. Every 12 months I would have my blood tested and I was always kept on the same dosage of 50mg. Recently we have moved and during this time I frequently forgot to take my thyroxine medication. I registered into a new local doctors and made my first appointment. On my arrival I was asked if it wax ok to be seen by a trainee gp and her mentor. So I had no problem with this. I mentioned that I had not been taking my medication on a regular basis and had not noticed any side effects. After sometime the mentor suggested that I keep off the medication for 3 months and then take another blood test. So I have recently just had my results back and everything is normal, I don't need anymore medication. Now I questioned why I have been prescribed for underactive thyroid for over 20 years? My son is studying medicine at present and he said that I probably had thyroiditis. Feeling quite annoyed ☹

What is it that your annoyed about? 50mcg wouldn’t touch the sides for most of us? Pregnancy can mess with us for sure and maybe it was just a blip for you but I’m not sure any ‘harm’ has been done?

It was most likely postpartum thyroiditis which can resolve after a while. The only way to find out is to try coming off the levothyroxine which you did by accident. If your levothyroxine requirement increased over time it would confirm your need for it but a continual dose of 50 mcg should raise suspicions. Unfortunately thyroid treatment is dismal, your case is quite minor compared to some stories. Hope you stay well.

Don't be annoyed with others, only with yourself for not bothering to take your medication.
