Death of the calorie

Quite a decent article - at least compared to most - about food calories and diet/dieting. Seems to be freely accessible. Probably nothing new to many but the historical context is explained.

Death of the calorie

For more than a century we’ve counted on calories to tell us what will make us fat. Peter Wilson says it’s time to bury the world’s most misleading measure

Interesting article, but it also surprises me how far behind the mainstream is. This article was still quite conservative in comparison to the way nutrition is discussed on this forum. Strange that Weightwatchers was mentioned but the Atkins diet and everything that's flowed from it wasn't.

Quite a few interesting nuggets, I liked the bit that discussed newer research saying pasta that's been cooked, cooled and reheated has less available calories.

Thank you for this!

Have to say, I don't really count calories anymore but I did ditch eating processed foods such as ready meals and cook from scratch now.

The only way I can lose excess fat is by severely limiting starchy carbs (bread, pasta and veg that grows below ground) and eat lots of veg that grows above ground and dumping sugar. It's shocking how much low calorie/low fat food has in it. Once you have stopped eating ready meals and ready sauces and just try one again (either out of convenience or curiosity!) you realise how repulsively sweet they are...icky! Just goes to show how easily conditioned we can be. :D

I did do the LCHF protocol for around 4 months and have lost 10kg over a year (from 38" waist to 31"). I really enjoyed it because you started eating stuff that you had been conditioned to believe was "naughty". I eat butter, use ff milk, ff yogurt etc. but have roast potatoes, which I love, as an occasional special treat. I have never been a big eater of pasta and I do occasionally have sourdough bread from the local bakery. Seems to work for me along with steady resistance/weight training to build muscle three times a week and maybe a gentle swim. No exhausting HIIT for me which makes me completely spent and probably not a good idea as I'm a slow converter.

I also strongly believe that excessive sugars severely affect us as inflammation, not good for us Hashi people.

Embrace the homemade sauerkraut and heal and repopulate your gut!

I think we are all different in how these regimens affect us and there is a lot of trial and error but it makes me SO angry that we are being told so many lies to line BigFoods pockets. When I was a kid there were hardly any obese people but past the 70's what the heck are we eating? As one person said (I forget who)...."When you look at an ingredients list and it contains a bunch of chemical names and numbers as the first listed, do you seriously want to put that in your body? If the list hasn't got stuff that you can find in a larder or fridge, just step away".

Thank you - tired of saying to medics, that CI-CO is ludicrous. Yes, standard medicine seems to have little clue: I'm beginning to wonder about even what? :-)
