Hello,

I’d really like some recommendations for a private endocrinologist within the midlands please?

I am in Northamptonshire, happy to travel.

Thank you

Email Dionne at Thyroid Uk for list of recommended thyroid specialists

Before seeing any thyroid specialist, especially if paying for private consultation, we recommend always getting FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing FIRST

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Do not take Levothyroxine dose in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take immediately after blood draw. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

I used to live in South Northamptonshire and found my Doctors practice very unhelpful and lacking knowledge. Refused to refer me to an Endocrinologist. So I changed to a Oxfordshire Practice. I saw Professor Wass privately at The Manor In Oxford. He is not practicing with the NHS but is such a lovely kind caring man. And he helped me to be seen at Addenbrookes Cambridge on the NHS. This has all taken a year but at long last I am trialling Liothyronine and if this doesn’t work they are looking into an injection form of treatment.

At Addenbrookes I was told the cost of Liothyronine shouldn’t come before a persons health. Not sure how my Surgery feel about that !

All the best to you. Stand your ground , gain as much knowledge as you can from all the very knowledgeable people on this site they know so much more than any GP I’ve met.

Hi Suzanne, I live very near Addenbrookes and am looking for an Endocrinologist either privately or public. Could you message me the name of the endo you liked? I am going to ask for a referral or go privately. Thank you!

Professor Wass wanted me to see Mark Gurnell, but I saw a lovely lady Dr CM. I had a 4 month wait on the NHS. But she did offer to see me privately. I went with the NHS as my GP practice had agreed for me to trial Liothyronine just needed a Consultant to prescribe it. I was already on liquid levothyroxine so the cost was less for the initial dose of Liothyronine. My GP had originally told me I had to be seen at my local hospital he couldn’t “willy nilly “ refer me across the country as the newspapers would have us believe is our right ! Professor Wass stepped in and the referral was made. It was then cancelled and PW got it reinstated again. Took awhile but got there last month.

Professor Wass advised me Addenbrookes was the best place to go for my thyroid issues. I can’t thank him and his secretary Valerie enough they went above and beyond to help me. Even though my Northamptonshire GP labelled me a troublesome patient and refused to prescribe liquid levothyroxine even though I had been a patient for nearly 20 years with ulcerative colitis, ileostomy, intestinal failure, liquid only (Ensure drinks ) diet. Levothyroxine or excipients were making me extremely ill.

Mark Gurnell doesn’t see private patients. Or he didn’t last year.

All the best.

Our guidelines include this:

27. Do not post information about specific endocrinologists or doctors on the main board without their permission as this may result in unwanted attention from certain areas of the medical profession. If you wish to discuss a particular endocrinologist or doctor, you may mention his/her name and location, providing that you ask for comments by private message only.
