Stopping levothyroxine

Hi. I’ve been on levothyroxine ( various doses) for 30 years. The reason for dose changes are due to blood results but I feel no different at all at any times. Still tired miserable cold and achy. 10 years ago I did a long walk, did a lot of training and got quite fit. On my return I was so ill. My medication was reduced dramatically. I personally thought that my thyroid had kicked in due to my fitness which was why I got over active. All gps said this was not possible so I took there word and carried on. I’ve recently moved house and need to change my go. Before I go for my med review I’ve decided to stop my tabs and start with a clean sheet of blood tests. I feel sometimes I’m treated on the results and not how I’m feeling. Any ideas please. I stopped 3 weeks ago and no change at all to date. Still tired cold miserable

Stopping Levo after 30 years is very unwise, your symptoms are more than likely due to undermedication but you need to post your last results with your doses so we can help you.

Thanks for reply. My symptoms haven’t changed since stopping meds. I always feel this way. I was on 175mcg

Strength and Sympathy for you . But I don't think it's wise regardless to stop your thyroid meds . At least if your on the same thyroid dose they can do BW and see what tweaking you will need .

Hi Christinepage, sounds like you have had a really miserable time. Unfortunately GP don't know an awful lot about the thyroid and how to treat it they tend to just look at the TSH and dose accordingly when it's much more than that, your t4 and t3 need to be in the top third to top quarter of the range and TSH needs to be around one or below, this is where most of us will feel well. Also it's very important to look at your vitamin levels your B12, ferritin, folate and vit D all need to be optimal for your levothyroxine to work properly.Have you had your antibodies tested, you really need to know if these have been done and what your blood test results are, you can get these printed out from you GP, don't worry if you don't understand them the members on here can help you with that. You need to learn as much as you can about how the thyroid works and how to treat and what medications are available. Start by looking at thyroid UK main site there are lots of good articles on how the thyroid works and the different medications available.i know how frustrating it can be when your taking medication and it doesn't seem to be working but it is possible to become well again if you can get the dosage right and you get the right medication and your vitamins optimal. I fear for you because you have stopped your levothyroxine as this could make you very ill, I once was so hypo with a TSH of over 100 that I ended up with a cycotic breakdown and would hate for anyone to suffer like I did. I really think you need to go back on the levothyroxine and then look at getting the dosage where it should be and look at the vitamins it really can make a difference. We are all here to help you and want you to feel well again. Take care xx
