Worried as trying for a baby

So I put my bloods up here previously and was told they looked like thyroidism have been showing symptoms of thyroid from the thyroid symptom list. The consultant at endo crossed out all the symptoms out and said they weren’t thyroid related! I was shocked as they are extra symptoms not related to my PA and they were on the thyroid uk website. They sycathen tested me at 2pm and I am waiting for the results but refused point blank to try me on thyroxine until 6 months down the line but I have to see another consultant and convince them to give me it. I have Pernicious Anaemia and am trying for my first baby and work full time. Everyday is a struggle health wise and I am worried if they take their time it will affect me having kids as I am 35. If I don’t get anywhere has anyone gone private? Have you had any success with going private? I will have to start saving!.....thanks

Consultant endos know nothing about symptoms, I'm afraid. I think they firmly believe that there aren't any symptoms when you're hypo and we silly women are just making a fuss about nothing! :(

Yeh think so....my jaw dropped when she was crossing them off! I had all of this when I was looking for a diagnosis of PA as they didn’t know I had it. Let fight number 2 commence! 😀

Hi Hezzymc,

I’m sorry I haven’t got the time at the moment to research it for you but there are guidelines that say when you are trying to conceive your TSH needs to be much lower than your level. You could google it and show the evidence to your GP/endocrinologist 😊

Thanks will try again as I argued my level and she said the tsh should be 10! Mine is 4.4

The UK is the only country in the world, as far as I know, that tortures it's patients like that. You are hypo when your TSH reaches 3. But, that would mean a lot more people get diagnosed in the UK than is presently the case. Hypo patients cost the NHS money, and they don't like it! So, they've moved the goalposts and said the TSH has to be 10 before they will diagnose. It's mean and it's stupid and it's ignorant, but that's they way they think. But, you will never conceive with a TSH that high, it needs to be below 2.5 - although even that is too high for a lot of people. Did you tell her you were hoping to conceive?

She sounds like a dead loss, anyway, she'd never make you well. Ask for a second opinion. :)

Yeh and she said I would be fine to conceive and to keep trying with my partner. She didn’t seem worried....I’m worried now!

She is very ignorant. But, then, most endos are. They only know about diabetes.

And to be honest, they don’t know a lot about diabetes either, do they?

I can't comment on that, because I don't have diabetes and have never consulted an endo for that. But, it's wouldn't surprise me if the were equally ignorant about that.

And mine told me to stop taking the Pill as I was so ill that I could NEVER conceive again - immediately after stopping the Pill I became pregnant and spent the whole 9 months being told by every medical professional that there was a high risk the baby would be a cretin. So I'm not sure they are always to be believed ;-). Regarding your situation, if you suspect that your thyroid functioning is not currently optimal, I would advise putting pregnancy plans on hold just for now. Pregnancy is a considerable thyroid drain for the mother, because certainly for the first trimester and maybe even up to 20 weeks, the foetus cannot make its own thyroid hormones and is wholly dependent on its Mother's. Thyroid hormone is critical for the baby's brain and other development; so you having access before embarking on a pregnancy, to optimal levels of either your own thyroid hormones, or exogenous Levothyroxine as necessary, is really important to both you and your baby.

I conceived! So pleased and have the midwife soon to discuss. Will bring up the 4.4 tsh and hopefully she can refer me to a consultant.
