Anybody who gets tonsil stones when on not enough medication for hypothyroidism?

Tonsil stones?
Ugh! Awful condition. Sorry, I can't answer your question but if you have them, you have my sympathy.
I used to get these, started noticing in my twenties - thirty odd years ago and long before hypothyroid diagnosis (2years ago). I didn't know they may be connected to low thyroid, but it doesn't surprise me.
I had tonsils removed after being so fed up and miserable having them.
I don't know if there's a solution, so sorry.
This is very interesting I had a horendous bout in my early 20’s I refused to have my tonsils out because I thought I don’t want anything like that getting further in to my body and the tonsils were probably doing something important in protection. It was a few years later that I started to get arthritis, presenting as trapped nerves and loss of function in my limbs (can be a precursor to hypothyroidism) and I slowly degenerated healthwise with one thing after another. I was eventually diagnosed with overt atropic (no goitre) autoimmune thyroiditis after decades of symptoms that were either treated as one off problems or later dismissed as menopausal. You wonder how these things cannot be related.
I’m undiagnosed hypo with goitre, but tonsil stones are yet another thing I’ve had in the last year.
I ve had these since a teenager and long before hypothyroid. I unexpectedly discovered whilst doing food elimination that giving up dairy removed them 99% of time!
I had my tonsils removed because of them , horrible irritation , not sure if they are connected with hypothyroidism
Do you mean the white ulcers on the tonsils? I had these about 30 years ago with recurring bouts of tonsillitis. I had my tonsils removed because of it. I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid around 2 years ago now x
They are so horrible! I had them since a child. Diagnosed with Graves in my twenties. Eventually had tonsils out. Painful but best decision ever. I used to press them out of my tonsils as best I could with a cotton bud (q tip) and gargle with mouth wash. If you see a ‘what’s causing your bad breath’ article they never mention them but it’s got to be the main cause of the worst bad breath problems.
Yep I had them since childhood (also long before hypo diagnosis/symptoms) and had to do exactly the same thing, some were really massive... used to get tonsillitis all the time too... doctor never did a thing for me. I don’t get it so badly now... I don’t do a lot differently but I do gargle with mouthwash every day.
Are you ok with mouthwash? The chemicals I mean. Would salt be better? I don’t have stones, so I can’t help but I’ve read tons about avoiding chemicals and most mouth washes are choc full.
Yes I agree - that was over ten years ago tho before my tonsillectomy. If I still had my tonsils in I would prob use salt water now.
Look up tonsil stones and Epstein-Barr - some say that tonsil problems are caused by this virus, and there is a theory that EBV causes thyroid issues.
Yup. Had them in the couple of years before my hypothyroidism became fully realised. Now I’m medicated I don’t get them but, when I have a hypo moment or need a dose increase, I do become prone to tonsillitis and post nasal drip. As far as I’m concerned, they’re definitely linked.
that is really interesting. i have developed stones, have terrible post nasal 2mos now and just had a second period this month - horrible reality when thyroid underperforming (i missed a few morning pills in same week). am on 4x60 ndt which seems a lot, but indicator suggests am low. used to have a fast metabolism, was annoyingly high energy - maybe i need another boost, 240 not enough???
My daughter, when she was young, always got these until she went dairy free... Also, to remove them we were advised to gargle with plain soda water (as in the mixer). Other things are to gargle with are neem mouthwash and also coconut oil (in liquid form) as it could help break down the greasy stuff the 'stones' are made from..
Not too sure about NDT myself as I’m on T4 mono therapy but post nasal drip and tonsil trouble are definitely hypo symptoms for me and clear up when I’m stable with medication. Sorry I can’t be more help than that!
Hi Clara, I have recently started getting tonsil stones. Unsure why or how to get rid of them.
You bring back memories. I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was 8 years old. The surgeon told my mother that it was the pussiest mess he had ever seen. How times have changed. These days, most surgeons would want to have any infections cleared up before they operated. I wasn't diagnosed with hypothyroidism until I was post-menopausal. But I had symptoms for years and years before that. When I began to suspect the truth and asked doctors about it, I kept being told that my thyroid was normal. Of course that was back when your TSH had to be over 10 for them to even consider you might have a problem. I live in the U.S. where the TSH threshold is much lower now.
Yes!!!!! Insane amount of them.
