Kidney stones & Thyroid conditions

Hi all

Does anyone know of the above link if there is one? I’ve read a few articles but quite old ones, which suggest a possible link? I was admitted last week overnight after having pain. CT scan showed a stone in the duct of the kidney and two stones in other kidney. Both ureters inflamed and backed up. I drink at least two litres of water a day because 8-9 years ago I passed a stone. That was the only time. Dr was asking me if there is a family history of passing stones. There isn’t that I know of.

I’ve a review in a couple of weeks so want to be prepared for that appointment. I hadn’t had any sleep for 4 days by the time I got to Casualty, then 12 hrs in there before being admitted at 1am - I was trying to rack my brain about thyroid connections.

Thanks in advance.

😉

Interesting, had a stone in the Kidney ureter 3 years back (also found a cyst on the same Kidney) had to have it removed, now my Ultrasound reveals a Cystic Nodule on my thyriod.

Are you currently taking vitamin D?

Get calcium, vitamin D and Parathyroid hormone levels tested together

Thanks SlowDragon. I just knew I had read somewhere there was a link. That site is great. I had RAI treatment on my thyroid and that’s a risk factor for the condition. I will ask GP to test for calcium levels and parathyroid levels. They were concerned that my kidney function was lower than optimal and both ureters inflamed.

Low Ft3 linked to low GFR rate

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

What thyroid hormones are you currently taking

ALWAYS test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Important to test vitamin D, calcium and parathyroid levels TOGETHER

You need all three ….

Are you currently taking any other medications or supplements

I’m not sure about a connection but I did have kidney stones about 10 years ago and I passed 2 of them. At my last scan I had a few small ones left. I too drink water constantly but I try not to go overboard because that’s how I got my latest stone to come down.

I hadn't heard this but how interesting. I have a history of kidney stones going back 20 years. Diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last year, remember mentioning to the Endo when I first saw him and was going through any medical issues I had and he made no comment about it.

I hope you are feeling better soon and in less pain, stones are horrible and not much fun to pass either.

Hi Lynn193

I suffer from kidney stones, I was hyperthyroidism ( graves) I passed one in 2019 2 months after my thyroidectomy then passed one in 2021..in 2020 my parathyroid hormones went over range along with over range calcium, I was told by 2 endos I probably have primary hyperparathiyroidism ( a condition where one or more parathyroid glands go over active, this can cause a range of problems one being kidney stones, as your calcium and parathyroid been checked?

If not I would ask for it to be done.. 👍 Do you have any symptoms like wanting to urinate a lot, and thirsty a lot?

Hi birkie

Thanks for your reply. Getting bloods done tomorrow. Yes to needing to pee constantly and I drink a lot of water to avoid kidney stones so thought that was the cause of needing to go all the time. Dr is checking parathyroid hormone too she says. The app that Slow Dragon recommended is absolutely excellent.

It's weird as when I was very hyperthyroid my calcium remained in range , obviously I was having blood tests to check my thyroid levels every 7/8 weeks, and calcium was always on the test, as I said in July 2019I passed a kidney stone in hospital 😩 but my surgeon said not to worry it took from May 2019 to Dec 2019 to get me on the correct thyroid drugs as I was not converting T4 in to T3.. I was put on T3 in Dec 2019..and my T3 rose to a good level and apart from an horrible metallic taste I felt OK for a time, then I passed another kidney stone in Feb 2021..but again the medical profession looking after me told me not to worry, I did and demanded my results be sent to an endo.. Endo wrote saying I probably have primary hyperparathiyroidism, I'm still waiting for these medical professionals to sort me out.. 😭

Did they establish you had hyperparathyroid and deal with it? Did you have surgery?

Mine is such a long drawn out case.. As I was diagnosed with early onset of primary hyperparathiyroidism in 2004..( I knew nothing of this condition and never at that time looked into it) just trusted the professional folk.. But that was my big mistake because they discharged me on one normal blood test, calcium and parathyroid can bounce around going in range then out, you need at least 2 consecutive bloods done to rule it in or out.. I had 2 in 2020 with parathyroid of 8.1 then 9.5..( range 1.60..6.90..so I was hyperparathyroid it could not have been secondary as my calcium was 2.53..2.54..top end.. But again after one normal blood test the endo dismissed me, since then my calcium as gone over again in 2021.. 2.67 and my parathyroid is hovering at the top end.. But endo won't touch me because my blood is in range but both at the top end this is an inappropriate relationship between calcium and parathyroid both should not be at the top end it should be a see saw method if one is up the other should be down.. I've got all the symptoms and kidney stones, ostiopein, calcified joints and heart and all my endo wants to do is watch and wait 🤷‍♀️😭😭😭
