Herbs spices and other potions: I just wondered... - Thyroid UK
Herbs spices and other potions
There are no super foods. There are nutrient-packed foods, and there are empty calories. Each nutrient has it's job. And what you need is a balanced diet, containing all the necessary nutrients in sufficient quantities to keep you well.
Yesi know this .. im nit to good on thyroid issues.. something im lewrning slowly.. but im quite good on herbs superfoods. Etc..im just interested in other views on these... π
Like the author in this LiveScience article, I believe the phrase "superfoods" is more a marketing term than necessarily a guide to varied and balanced eating. Far better to have an understanding of all the food groups and the foods within those groups, and eat accordingly; than confine oneself to, or overindulge one's eating of a small range of alleged superfoods to the exclusion of others not given that nomenclature. There's also a tendency for some to almost fetishise certain food stuffs and their eating of them - which is not healthy in itself. livescience.com/34693-super...
In my view expensive superfoods (yes they hike up the prices) are little more than another ploy to pander to nutrient ignorant people who are only too ready to throw money at not only the foods promoted but the books and merchandise associated with this idea. Food becomes something to fear!
Eating a healthy well balanced diet need not be expensive but people must first be taught the nutritional value of the food available and, significantly, the best way to cook it.
Television cookery shows are, for the most part, entertainment ...not education,
Nutrition should be a core subject in schools from day one - it is a science. If it were, taught properly then many of the food related problems costing the country a fortune would be at worst reduced...and at best, eliminated!
Nutrition and cookery should never have become the Cinderella of the curriculum - I would love to be proved wrong! If it were otherwise then why are so many people so ignorant of the basic facts and consequently becoming increasingly unhealthy?
Eat and enjoy good food for what it is....fuel, not a lifestyle that it so often appears to engender
You asked Spotydave , that's my take on the matter.
Happy eating

Its always intresting to get peoples views and ideas and believes.... ππππ
I use coconut oil, but I don't consider it to be a super food. I just use it as one of several fats and oils I use in cooking. I decided a few years ago that I would only use fats and oils in cooking that humans from 200 years ago, from somewhere in the world, would recognise. I avoid sunflower oil or generic vegetable oil or rapeseed oil, for example.
As for cider vinegar, I have mixed feelings. I have a very unhealthy gut for various reasons, and I feel that increasing the acidity of my gut would be helpful. But I am not keen on the idea of swallowing an acid, even a weak acid like cider vinegar diluted with water, because I think it would be bad for my teeth. I have tried betaine HCL in capsules to increase the acid of my stomach, but I suffer from chronic pain in one part of my gut, and anything acidic - even vitamin C - causes me more pain. So, I'm stuffed in this respect.
I do, intermittently, take oregano oil which is supposed to be good for the gut, and I think it helps. I've also recently started taking digestive enzymes with my main meal of the day (when I remember). I've tried them before and they haven't helped, but I'm sure I need them, so every so often I try them in the hope of finding a brand that works for me.
I will try and find a non-prescription treatment for almost everything. If I broke a leg or had a heart attack I would see a doctor. For various other non-visible, non life-threatening problems I try and fix them myself. Doctors are unhelpful. They have routinely told me I am mentally ill, and I am to blame for my own health problems, for decades. They resist treating me for anything and everything. They've nearly killed me twice. My expectations of them are nil. So anything sensible and not harmful and with some logic behind it that might help my various physical problems is something I will research and I may even try. I think of it as trying to take responsibility for my own health.
Great read . Im similar to you.. i use coconut oil to cook..and oregano for the same reasons..
I do think theres good be some good things about some herbs as they have been used for avery long time and as we know vitams play a vital role in keeping us on the straight and narrow But we are in a very money making time and over marketed so as always homework is needed and indeed forums like this with lots of knowledgeable people who want to chat and indeed learn more..
LOL, Spotydave, what a cracker of a username.
I would say yes if your body can digest and absorb them but for many of us with hypothyroid or bodies have issues with absorbency.
Our stomach acids are less effective with age and also with disease eg thyroid disease, so we do not get all the goodness from the foods we eat which is probably why we have issues with energy, Hair loss, brittle ridged nails, dry skin ect.
In addition to our poor absorbency some of the foods we are eating have been grown in soils were the nutrient levels are very poor of even depleted so decreasing recovery.
We need to learn how to maximise our absorbency and try to achieve good gut health and then if we are feeling exhausted all the time switch energy supplier eg try keto instead of carbs which in there complex form can for me clog up my digestive tract and cause me to gain too much weight.
