ultrasound scan: on an ultrasound what would show... - Thyroid UK
ultrasound scan
Could show lower thyroid volume if shrinkage has occurred. Otherwise if you are early into this, not much change. The ultrasound only shows size, not what it's doing actively.
Hi
I had ultrasound scan to confirm Hashimoto’s (blood test confirmed as well) it shows up nodules.
The person doing it doesn’t disclose anything, despite me asking.
A report is then sent to whom ever asked for it to be done GP, Endocrinologist.
I paid private for this but didn’t see the report until my Endocrinologist saw it first.
Best Wishes

had ultrasound scan in march after swelling noticed down front of throat .Report says mildly enlarged thyroid with multiple benign looking tiny nodules
Sounds like Hashimoto's
Have you had both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested?
Though you can have Hashimoto's without ever having high antibodies
heyhashi.org/hashimotos-low...
Important to test vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin as well as TSH, FT4 and FT3
TPO <50 iu/ml <50 ,vit D total 60.0nmol/l , folate 3.1 ug/l 3.1-19.9 ,B12 243ng/l 180-914 ,ferritin 77 ug/l 11-307 ,TSH 2.50 mu/l 0.38-5.33 ,FT4 11 pmol/l 7.8-14.4 these have been spread over 12 months as doctor never requested altogether
So your vitamin D is too low, but not low enough for GP to prescribe
Are you now supplementing? If so how much?
Folate is right at bottom of range. GP should prescribe. Did they?
B12 far too low. GP should be testing for Pernicious Anaemia. Did they?
Low vitamin levels are extremely common with Hashimoto's or just being hypothyroid
Getting vitamins optimal is first steps.
TPO antibodies, the answer isn't clear. I think it means result must be under 50 to be negative. Not sure if your result is under 50 or over 50
You need TG antibodies tested too, but NHS often refuses
I had an ultrasound sound last Friday. I was told by the lady doing it that my thyroid is a normal size but very patchy which she said would indicate Graves disease or autoimmune thyroiditis. I think I must've had hashimotos for some time, I've certainly had the symptoms
My tests showed I had Hashimoto’s through blood tests for antibodies. I didn’t have swelling of my throat.
My US showed several small nodules, which they said indicated prior attacks, and one larger one where I was complaining of a feeling of a lump. Indicative of thyroiditis. Bloods already shown antibodies and thus Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Thyroid levels were ‘within normal’ so managing with restricted gluten.
