Following on from yesterday and the presentation on Keto low carb diets - Dr. Paul Mason - 'Low Carb from a Doctor's perspective'

To prove it works, I am copying and pasting my reply to one of our friends. Hope it helps you more in deciding whether a Keto is for you or not and my previous experience, which I now regret, did not follow through.

I think the Dr said in his presentation, that we are all different and that our carb in take is different. Some can get by on just 20g, but some need 80g. I think because we are so used to carbs, the headaches we experience when we are off them, is because we are addicted to sugar and it is like going cold turkey so to speak.

We did a similar eating plan a few years ago and the headache and cravings were horrendous for the first few days. They also told us that most of us consume the equivalent of between 70-100 teaspoons of sugar a day without realising it, before we starting adding sugar to our food because of the stuff we eat. My only concern is that I will need to cut down on my fruit. But I am willing to give anything a go to get this weight off. I know it is not me, but the hormones doing it. I was never big, before they started messing me around.

When we did the above eating plan, we consumed the equivalent to 12 teaspoons of sugar a day, which equates to 60g of carbs. 5g = 1 teaspoon of sugar. In a three month period, I lost 3.5 stone of fat alone. (They had those special scales that tell you everything) I lost loads of inches and had a lot of compliments but my downfall was the fruit limitations. I regret not continuing with it but willing to give it another go.

Can you imagine how many teaspoons of sugar a ready made meal has in it! I think one meal I checked out, had the equivalent of 35 teaspoons of sugar! Never eaten a ready meal since.

Added link about high fibre and low carb vegetables to help conquer the dreaded constipation we might initially get.

You might want to mention which presentation you are talking about. :)

I'm shocked at the number of teaspoons of sugar you mention. But then I was shocked recently to discover that the average baked potato contains the equivalent of 19 or 20 teaspoons of sugar. Thankfully I've never been a fan of potatoes. My downfall is ice cream and sweets, with the odd bar of chocolate thrown in for good measure.

Thanks humanbean,

I have changed the title and it would make sense! ;)

Yes it is surprising and I was absolutely amazed at the time. We went to a big seminar about it in Coventry, must be ten years ago now, after reading about it in the local paper. One lady had lost 84lb in six months - so yes I thought, I want some of that ha ha!

We were amazed at the sugar content too in our food especially fruit juice. At the time they said not to consume spreadable butters but use the block butters, which I do anyway unsalted versions. Evidently at the time the spreadable's had the crappy fats in like hydrogenated stuff - not sure if they have now.

I hope you like it. But you might find you need to drink lots of fluid, I feel thirsty and urine can be quite yellow. Hopefully the fat is melting away ;) Lost 1lb already on just a day! Maybe coincidence, but it has happened. My hubs has lost 0.5lb.

My husband's GP lost over 3 stone on the keto diet & advised my husband to do the same. After a month he lost a stone, but got very seriously bunged up.We have now stocked up on psillium husk & linseed, ready for the next attempt.I am making kefir & have stocked up on inulin.

That is brilliant your hubs has lost a stone on his first attempt. My fear is the constipation side.

My daughter has lost 17.8lb in sixteen days. She says a lot of green veg she uses has the fibre in it. This link has got low carb veg with fibre including nuts and coconut.

The same dr also does a presentation of constipation and the gut, which might help us all.

Hope this helps Naomi8 :)

Will check this out.The degree of constipation really put him off. He's realised he must use psillium husk & linseed daily(See "The Diet Doctor")extremely comprehensive. He's a Swedish MD not a DO or DC

My husband was eating large amounts of green vegetables every day on the diet.

It is quite interesting. I am dubious about the constipation side to be honest. Thank you for telling me about the Diet Dr - really interesting recipes.

Did he try MCT oil? Clears up it up very quickly and produces ketones very quickly.

In answer to you first question Punky12, not heard of that one. What does it mean? I think the main oils are coconut, olive oil and sesame oil. I have lost a further 1.5lb. So over half a stone in a few days. Very pleased.

MCT oil is a coconut oil that boosts ketones and will clear up constipation very quickly. Oh yes have you tried avocado oil? It is really good. One of my favorites. I also like to cook with Gee.

Hi check out Mark Sisson or Marks daily apple, everything you will ever need to know about Keto and the science behind it.

Thank you clubby29, Have you tried it all?

I am just surprised how satisfied I am and no cravings as such. The ones I do have, are liveable.

Curious to find out how many people have got on with the keto or thinking about it?

Take care :)

Hi I am not a full keto it’s. But I do keep my carb level quite low. I like marks approach to life and his thoughts on stress management and just slowing life down as much as possible. He likes his fasting as well. I think it’s your fat intake that will help control cravings and hunger. There are no hard and fast rules with it you just have to play and find out what works for you, in a lot of cases it’s just a way of eating that most people did pre 1970.

I agree clubby29,

Good old fashioned cooking without the crappy fast food, ready made meals and low fat stuff. I have never rated it.

I have ironically lost 4lb since Saturday, most probably fluid who knows, but I willing to give anything go. The meals I have had so far and enjoyed and added bonus of three nights without the devil cravings - can't be bad!
