Diagnosis and treatment

Hi everyone this is my first time on here but I was looking for a site where I can talk to people. I am a 34 year old man and the only other people I know who suffer with thyroids are women so I wanted to get some advice from both sides.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism around 4 years ago and to say its been bad as been an understatement but with the support of my wife and kids behind me as been great.

the doctors started me on 50nmirogram of levothyroxine but now I am on 200 and still feel far from right which is frustrating to say the least.

I have been to the doctors so many times with complaint's and they have either up my dosage or lowered it the last time I had a blood test it came back as normal but when I went to see the doctors she told me that I was on to much and that was causing my anxiety levels to shoot up but I never got a phone call back stating this after my blood test.

I suffer massively with anxiety and depression and am on 50 micrograms of sertraline I am very happy with my wife and kids but in myself at times I feel awful ( so tired , emotional , sweats , low libido etc) just wondering if there is any advice for me out there.

I was going to ask the doctor if I can see a specialist but not sure if that is right and advice is welcome thank you.

Before others ask for your blood test results (as they will), can I ask if you've been on any other medication of any type besides sertraline and levo in past 5 years?

Hi. I replied to you a few days ago but I think there is something you must take on board and may be no one actually mentioned yet. There is not a quick fix! Sad but true I'm afraid and it can take a while before you start to feel better. You can't speed things up and trying to do so is more likely to confuse the issue and get you in a mess. You should have gathered that there are various things suggested and yes it can be very confusing at first and waiting 6 weeks before testing again sounds and feels like an eternity but that's how it is. One important thing to study is an in depth search of the Thyroid U.K. site. They run this forum. But it is a lot to take in at once and especially as it cen be several weeks or more before you feel things are working but start slowly and carefully and don't give up.

Firstly make sure you are taking the medication correctly. And make sure you get the retest 6-8 weeks after the last one. It takes a full 6 weeks to get the medication fully into your system and testing early won't give you an accurate pointer for the future. We start low because it's a hormone that takes our body a time to get used to so we don't want to hit it with something that is too much at that time. It can take several months to get that in the right place. Another reason for taking it slowly is that we might over dose, rushing could cause you to jump above the correct dose for you and being over medicated can make you feel worse than being undermedicated, trust me! Keep posting any results and ranges you get and we can help you understand them and move forward. Never forget the ranges as they differ from lab to lab so without them we would just be guessing. Also get Vit D, B12, folate and ferritin tested and you will get advise about those. Get those optimal aswell and you will then have a good basis to build on.

Consistency I feel is very important but it sometimes feels at the start that you will never get right but each thing you add in is helping but if we did too much at once it becomes very difficult to say what/which is best for you. We can all react differently so this is a good time to learn to listen to your body. Increasing vitamins can take an age as well. I took about 5 months but that depends how good/bad they are so again patience is needed. So that's a good start and as you progress we shall be able to see what may be needed to add in next. Don't over do the exercise till you get things on the mend and good luck!
