Diagnosis Confirmed, Treatment commenced - now ultrasound worries.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has helped me. This website has been the best source of support and advice and it's really helped understand that I AM NOT CRAZY!

So after a year with illness and the GP's getting no where, I finally met a wonderful Endo last week who has put a name to my issues: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. He has started me on 100mcg of Levo which I've now been taking for a week. At the moment no improvement and still very exhausted. I see him again next Friday and he's ordered blood tests to look at my feritin stores and T3 levels.

I had an ultrasound of my thyroid yesterday. My throat has been very uncomfortable for a while - not pain as such, just an uncomfortable pressure like someone is strangling me! The Radiologist was lovely but gave nothing away at the end of the scan. He just asked how long I'd been in pain and when I asked if he'd found something he said a few bits and bobs and that my endo was great and would go through everything with me next week.

I'm a logical girl and even in the unlikely event that it’s something on the nasty side I know odds are in my favour. Doesn't help that little niggle of doubt and concern.

Hopefully whatever it is will die down as the drugs start to work…..when they start to work!

Dr Jennings. He has been wonderful (the one time I've seen him) and felt like the first doctor in over a year to actually know what he's talking about!

I know - it makes a difference when you have someone believing you!

So far the meds have had no effect :/ Need to give it time!

Lovely to hear of two excellent endo's in a matter of minutes - gives us all hope.

.....had a full throat feeling before and after diagnosis - always though I suffered with badly swollen glands. Most of my life in fact ! However once the treatment was optimal and all the other bits and pieces were in place the feeling went away.

My scan revealed nodes and I have them checked annually. They haven't changed since 2005. The Greeks are much more open and talk you through the scan and give you the pictures and the report at the end for you to take away with you.

Can understand your concern - but even a few small trouble free nodes can make your throat feel uncomfortable. With Hashimotos Thyroiditis - it will mean the thyroid is inflamed and this may well cause it to swell and cause your discomfort.....

Wishing you well soon - oh just an aside ! 100 mcg is quite a high starting dose - and also keep an eye on that FT3 in your subsequent tests. For some people T4 does not convert as well as it should in some Hashimoto patients. I'm one of those !

Thanks so much everyone! Dr J has requested a blood test before I see him to see how the conversion is going. So far I've not really felt any effect from the levo either good or bad. I need to give it more time!

I have similar to you - radiologist will never say anything about diagnosis. I went on to have fine needle aspiration (is not painful, and really helps with peace of mind) did not have cancer, is very rare but has to be ruled out. My thyroid problem triggered by acute bacterial throat infection - now being attacked by antibodies but being brought under control by carbrimazole and decent endo who listens....

Thanks so much Tilly. It's so odd. In 2011 I had a year of throat infections/pain....wonder if it's all related?! I'm not squeamish at all when it comes to needles/blood/gore but the thought of someone sticking a needle in my neck does give me the heebie jeebies.

Hi - after my throat infection had repeated sore throats for four months plus, then saw the lump on left side of thyroid. I believe the bacterial infection triggered it but it came after a prolonged period of stress - son had been in Afghanistan was medic in FOB where one in four killed or injured and I'd gone self-employed and thought I was superwoman, my body didn't ...I now take much better care of myself - yoga (Iynenga) massage, acupuncture and given up all wheat and caffeine plus 90 per cent of dairy, feel much better for it and not difficult to do....x The needle biopsy was fine as long as closed eyes and deep breathed and feel this will make sure nothing more difficult is causing problems xx
