I started taking a NDT last July. I was originally taking Naturethroid but I changed to Thiroyd in September, as I wasn't feeling any better with each increase. Since switching to Thiroyd I haven't been able to take more than 1 1/4 grains as when I try to increase I feel ill with fatigue, heart palpitations, diarrhea and a weird swaying sensation like I am on a boat. Also, my pulse and basal temp doesn't go up too much, so I thought maybe it might be my adrenals? I am hoping to do an adrenal saliva test this week. I feel a lot better than I did on Levo, but I know that I am not on my optimal dose.

I have been on 1 1/4 grains since the middle of September and I just wondered if I should do a blood test soon for my thyroid, as it looks like I am going to be stuck on this dose for quite some time?

Thank you.

When you try to increase your dose, do you add 1/4 tablet every two weeks, taking note of your temp/pulse? Do you take one daily dose?

Yes I have been increasing by 1/4 grain every two weeks and have been checking my temp/pulse. I split my dose am and pm, but i intend to take it in one daily dose once I reach my optimal dose.

Rachel357,

I suffered "fatigue, heart palpitations, diarrhoea and a weird swaying sensation like I am on a boat".

I believe it to be adrenal gland issues which become compromised through having to support low thyroid hormone, and have to be given time to catch up with the increased metabolism created by the increase in thyroid hormone.

Thankfully for me my adrenal glands have recovered enough for me to function well. I have answered on your other post re sex hormones.

How long did it take for your adrenal glands to recover?

It could also be because your thyroid isn't working at its best and so you need Vit D, B12, folate and ferritin to be optimal, not just in range. Getting them optimal can make a big difference.

I had these tested last May and they were all optimal, except for ferritin, but I had this checked again in August and it was optimal but serum iron was a bit high. I would like to get these tested again soon and wasn't sure whether I should get a blood test for my thyroid too.

If you can get your thyroid tested it could be useful. My dose on NDT is only 1.75 and 1.50 every 4th day. At least then you really know what is happening. I have low Vit D and low ferritin but it took me around 5 months to sort then I have no problem switching over to NDT other that by going up slowly to 2 grains but missed my sweet spot at first! Once I was in the right place I started taking my NDT all at once as kept missing my afternoon dose at the right time!
