Diagnosed with hypothyroid last month and started on Levo 50mcg.

Cholesterol which is usually 6.4ish is now 8. Really good diet. No statins. Had funny do on Tuesday ? minor stroke ? neurological (as visual disturbances with one sided weakness). Drs unconcerned about cholesterol at the moment. I am very concerned as strokes and heart disease in the family.

Advice gratefully received. Thank you

Hypothyroidism affects cholesterol. Once you are on the correct dose of levo your cholesterol should come down, mine did. I understand your concerns with your family history but try not to worry about it. (Easier said than done I know.) Have you got any blood test results for iron, ferritin, folate, Vit D and B12. These all need to be well up in their ranges for levo to work properly. Read what seaside Susie has to say, lots of very good advice

Thank you. The Drs aren't very forthcoming at all. I have felt dire since the beginning of the year. A TSH of 5.6 and symptoms, they made me wait another 6 months and then were going to leave me longer even though second results were also out. Not anaemic, Vit D slightly low (after a week in Turkey) Calcium okay. Going for the rest of the bloods next week. Really appreciate your expertise. :-)

Yes, as crimple says, cholesterol will come down when optimally medicated. Please try and avoid the statins ~ it's more important to get thyroid and nutrient levels corrected. GPs and Endos are notoriously bad at this, so if you have any other results, please post them on the forum for advice from knowledgeable members. You will get lots of help on here so don't worry. 🌻🐝 x

Thank you very much. I will try and steer clear of the statins and see what happens with my bloods. Taking advice re helpful supplements off the site too. I am going for other bloods next week. Did my own thyroid assay a couple of days ago. X

Cistus incanus tea may help. It's got more of the good stuff than red wine, without the alcohol. A 500 g bag from eBay lasts ages. I use a TBSP to about a litre of boiling water in a jar; apparently it's important to steep it with a lid on the jar. I get through a litre a day and they advise re-brewing it three times to get all the good stuff out.

My total cholesterol has dropped from 6.4 to 5.0.
