Hi All, I obtained my late mothers medical records because her and her four sisters all had/have thyroid problems. I went to my GP as I am always tired, lethargic etc to ask if I could be tested for thyroid problems but they said no I couldn't understand why, to my surprise my birth doesn't appear on her records should it? According to my GP my mother is not my mother not quite sure what to do next any suggestions.

Records can be wrong.

Regardless of that your GP should offer testing to evaluate possible causes

To test your own blood levels, for full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies and also very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

Come back here with new post once you have results and ranges

I really don't know but I am adopted many are and never know about it until obtaining a passport or such. It could be that they have just been mislaid.

In any case your doctor should test you if you have the correct symptoms regardless of your mother's records it's you, after all that he is supposed to be treating now.

And even If she is not your blood mother why does your doctor refuse to investigate you for a thyroid disorder - you will know a lot about the symptoms having a mum and three aunts with problems you will have observed over the years. These medics are utterly exasperating. I nearly died because no one would listen to me despite telling them that many female relatives suffer/ed thyroid disorders including my mother - and that was over decades of decline in my health. I was eventually diagnosed with overt hypothyroidism and was horribly unwell too hideousto contémplate let alone think another poor person might end up in that state as a result of medical negligence. If you can afford it get tests and bypass these irresponsible health care “professionals” at least you can post on here and get some sensible advice.
