Caffeine and Hypothyroidism

I read something the other day about the effect caffeine has on the thyroid. Caffeine takes the place of the thyroid, and over time, hypothyroidism occurs. It shuts down the thyroid. When taking Levothyroxine, caffeine should be avoided because it keeps the body from absorbing it.

Has anyone else heard anything like this? Is this something I should really take seriously?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 6 months ago, I have a check up in a couple weeks.

The answer is yes - it should be taken seriously but it doesn't mean you have to remove it from your daily intake. You have to allow your thyroid hormones time to be absorbed into your system.

I have found over the years, prior to knowing I had Hashimoto's, that some days I could drink coffee without an issue and other it would make me feel really hypoglycaemic. I have since realised that I must be less able to tolerate it on bad thyroid days. I now, very sadly, don’t drink coffee at all :-(
