If she has low folate she also needs B12, ferritin and vitamin D testing
GP should be prescribing for low folate as well rather than just telling her to self supplement
A good quality vitamin B complex with folate in may help
For full Thyroid evaluation she needs TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodi also very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.
All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)
Thank you - yes - her B12 was on the low side but in range. She also had high creatine, and a protein ? Suggesting poor absorption. Plus high cholesterol and blood sugar. She was a bit dehydrated on the day.
Taking a good quality daily vitamin B complex with folate in not folic acid would improve B12 too. Eg Igennus Super B complex or Jarrow B-right
If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results
Getting vitamins optimal is first step. Then getting full private testing on Thyroid 2-3 months time. Including FT3 and both TPO and TG antibodies
High blood sugar, look at reducing bread, pasta, rice etc and replacing with more protein and good fats. Lots of books and info available on internet on reducing blood sugar by changing diet slightly
