Disappointing trip to the doctors

Just been to the doctors regarding my blood results from medichecks. I’m so upset, complete waste of my time, she prescribed ferritin tablets but other than that would not look at any of the blood test results as she said rather than getting them done else where I should have got them done there. I’ve been worrying all weekend about the CRP test (see my last post for blood results) as it can be a sign of cancer, prob just because I’ve recently had an op but still I expected reassurance from GP and got know. Now on my way to work, can’t stop crying and just fed up with it all.

Unfortunately not an uncommon reaction :( Did you ask whether she would have done all the tests? Did you ask her to do them now as she won't accept your private ones? Your Active B12 is a concern and needs looking into.

How much ferrous fumarate has she prescribed? Did you ask for a full blood count to see if you have iron deficiency anemia? You need to know that as there is a specific number of tablets for iron deficiency anaemia, and you should be monitored. Did you suggest that as your Ferritin is below range an iron infusion would give much quicker results?

Your iron tablets need to be taken 4 hours away from your thyroid meds and 2 hours away from any other medication or supplements as it will affect their absorption. Take each iron tablet with 1000mg Vit C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation.

Your Vit D is low, but not low enough for your GP to prescribe anything. You'll have to take care of that yourself and the recommended level is 100-150nmol according to the Vit D Council.

I did say I got them done privately as they wouldn’t have done all the tests. She wasn’t interested in letting me speak at all, I managed to ask about an iron infusion but she just ignored me and gave me a prescription for 100 ferrous fumarate and I said could I have them on repeat and she just said if you run out and don’t feel better come back and webcam discuss it then. She said I had to fill blood counts done at the hospital this month and they both came back with normal results.

I also asked for a pernicious anaemia test and if I could have a coeliac test done but she didn’t reply and just wanted me out the door for the next patient. Try to tell her I was feeling depressed and seeing no point or life but she just was not interested. I’m looking into seeing a private doctor for thyroid issues but it looks like at least £200 so out of my price bracket at mo.

Thank you for the advice regarding taking the tablets 4 hours after thyroxine.

I will also look into this vit d once I have got settled on the iron tablets.

Gett Started in ferrous fumerate supplements, making sure to take each one with vitamin C to aid absorption. Presumably prescribed 3 per day? They must be 4 hours away from taking Levothyroxine

As SeasideSusie says, sadly far to common reaction. Is there another GP you can see next time?

Self supplement vitamin D, perhaps try vitamin D mouth spray as avoids poor gut function of Hashimoto's

Magnesium supplements are good when on vitamin D supplements and if iron supplements cause constipation, magnesium is good for that too. Again make sure magnesium is four hours away from Levo

Only start one supplement at a time. So iron first

Then vitamin D

Then, as GP unhelpful, simply self supplementing good quality vitamin B complex eg Igennus Super B or Jarrow B right

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results
