Anyone else with graves and hashis...

I have gone from being hypo to hyperthyroid. Tested positive from Graves antibodies and endo thinks I probably have hashis too. Would be interested in hearing people's stories of how this was managed. Just started on a low dose of carbimazole and am worried about how this will go (the carbimazole) and how my condition(s) will be managed long term.

Feeling like I need a bit of handhold!

One of the things that might help you to know is that with any thyroid problem the body often ends up low or very low on some or all of Iron, Ferritin, Vit D, B12 and Folate. It doesn't matter how healthy your diet is, it seems the thyroid problem stops us from absorbing these nutrients from our diet. You can help yourself feel a whole lot better and make better use of the thyroid medication by getting these tested and supplementing until they are at or above half way in their ranges. SeasideSusie has posted lots of very helpful information on the subject. Doctor don't seem to know this and often think that having levels right at the bottom of the 'normal' range is OK. You can't overdose on B12, but the others all need testing periodically.

Hi there, i have both too but i am on 2.5mgs of carbi every other day now, i was diagnosed with hyperthyroid last august- my endo says one will cancel out the other but it is hard to treat, dont know how accurate his info is as i dont have much faith in his skills anyway. My levels are within range but frees are the lower range so im trying to raise these on a lower dose. Xx

Hi thanks so much or replyIng. Yes my worth is how hard it will be to manage. I suspect you fluctuate from one to the other and each time have to fiddle with meds for ages? Is that your experience? At the moment my thyroid hormones are teetering about at the top of the range and getting fluctuating but mild symptoms. Endo has just put me on 5mg of carbimazole to try to bring my levels down a little bit. Very scared of going hypo again as felt so ill when hypo. Could barely function. Felt like everything was shutting down. Also scared about osteoporosis. Just worried I think about what is going to happen and so so tired of feeling ill. It makes life so hard!

Enough if the moaning though and I know I should try not to worry about things that haven’t happened yet but just wanted to hear others experiences and hopefully get a bit of mutual support. My husband is great but I don’t think anyone who hasn’t actually experienced a chronic health condition can properly understand it.

X

Lol yes😊it is hard on us and like you i am lucky to have a very supportive husband, i think we are very fortunate! I have titrated my doses down from 20mgs to 2.5 now every other day and endo says i will be on it till at least january 2019-18 months then, like you i was worried over the hashis too but was told treatment at this time would be carbi not levo as i was hyper, i hit hypo in december so reduced meds again but even though my levels are are but lower frees im still not right, but better than i was last summer, i do rhink i get regular hashi symptons swinging to hyper for a few days and rhen hypo but until im off this damn carbi there is little option😕 but im with you all the way mini-mum, keep up the fight, this is my 8th month of work now.xx

Yes I seem to swing from hypo to hyper symptoms too but my bloods say slightly hyper at the moment. That’s odd isn’t it. Just started carbi and then will be retested in 6 weeks. Am told for about a year. Think my endo seems good. He said If I feel hypo go to gp to get tested to see. Reassuring. It is like a fight isn’t it! I feel like my entire life revolves around my health at the moment. Just wish I could think about something else and life wasn’t such a struggle. I Mrs hard because I can carry on just feeling unwell and fatigued all the time. 💐

Do you get the horrid tight throat like someones hands around your neck-apparently its a hashi flare sympton? Ooh i hate it.xx
