The Great Ferritin Experiment

Hi guys,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on this site with grey goose et al :)

Unfortunately my symptoms still remain and the final straw was my last blood test last week, ferritin is 16 sooooo I’ve decided to conduct a Great Ferritin Experiment where I will be conducting first hand research on what actually works to raise Ferritin levels.

Please follow my progress & any suggestions please feel free!

Liver or liver pate once a week should help.

That’s my first experiment :)

Black pudding twice a week helped my levels.

Thanks for the reminder that liver pate exists. I find liver disgusting but I remember having liver pate at a party once and found it delicious. That will probably do the trick. Thanks.

Can I just ask a question? You say they have dropped again so are you getting up to a decent level and then stopping medication? Lots of us take supplements but the general thing is to keep taking them if need to or find a maintenance dose to keep it there. I just wondered if that might be your problem.

My issue is that I don’t cope well with iron tablets and supplements long enough for me to notice an impact on ferritin. Also the whole process of ferritin testing via the GP is longwinded and annoying. You have to make an appointment, request a blood test, take it and then wait a week to 10 days for results, and then I have to request a printout because all I get is a text saying ‘no action required’. In this experiment I will be documenting what I do and monitoring ferritin carefully.

Thank you for the support guys. Please check in on the blog, as I will be updating it today and periodically and starting the experiment!

Do you eat gluten-free?

I improved my uptake of iron from supplements and food by changing my diet to gluten-free. It (my iron uptake) still isn't great, but is a lot better than before.

That’ll be interesting to test in this experiment so I will definitely add that to my list.

Very many find going strictly gluten free helps improve vitamin levels

Persistent low vitamins with supplements suggests coeliac disease or gluten intolerance

Hi, Great idea! My ferritin has been around 7 since it was first tested a year ago. I had various problems with the different supplements given to me by my GP. I started with Floradex in February and I’m due to be tested in two weeks to see if it’s made a difference. I feel it has but this could be due to the T4 I started taking in December. If not I’m to be booked in for an IV which I’ve been trying to avoid. Best of luck with this. I’ll definately be following your blog. Michelle

Have you got the Lucky Iron Fish on your list? luckyironfish.com

I do!

I would discourage the fish personally! Tried drinking water boiled with it in but it did taste like water boiled with an old car wheel in it. Just what it says on the tin😉

Britangerine profile image
Britangerine in reply toSybilla14

They do have recipes and I think the makers encourage cooking with it rather than drinking. Spatone tastes a bit like that as well, maybe mix it with apple or orange juice?

Sybilla14 profile image
Sybilla14 in reply toBritangerine

Well this was my only try of the fish and it went back in the box as I got completely put off by the intensity of flavour it gave off. I have used spatone and can take it in a glass of water no problem. I could try the fish in my bone broth but it will probably be too strong and overpower it. Guess it may work in heavy flavour dishes, curries maybe but it's not something I cook much.

I have found that when people supplement, they say they are taking three iron pills, for example. But they do not state the type ( ie bisglycinate, or ferrious sulphate ) or the quantity (ie 3x 25MG).

I am unsure how much to supplement. My iron was low but "in range", so my Endo would not recommend a supplement. After having two useless Endocrinologists I have gone back to my primary care physician. That was stupid of me because she ordered the wrong iron ( and vitamin D) tests. So I am still unsure how much iron to take. Right now I take 50MG iron bisglycinate and eat red meat twice a week. I tried liver but it literally made me gag.

So please, in your blog, please state type and units.

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!!!!!

PS I just saw this : ancestralsupplements.com/de...

Dessicated grass fed liver. Which I will try once my elevated liver enzymes have returned to normal. (I was told to stop taking supplements other than 1000IU vit D daily.)

Livers not for everyone though I will be posting a Moroccan recipe tomorrow...

I know the feeling of frustration regarding supplements but I’ll be looking into that as well in the coming months :)

Good topic Britangerine, I am one who is very conscious about my iron intake but my Ferritin is lousy - about two points above the lower limit. I'll be following your experiment - I'm all for experiments, can't beat 'em for getting at reality.

I shall be following. I seem to have problems with my Wordpress account and can't be focussed enough to sort it out. So I will hope to be able to follow on here.

Isn't 400g in 1 week rather a lot? SeasideSusie has amounts on her posts. I know it's good not to overdo it.

Interesting to know that chicken livers are higher in iron than the others.

You say you are going to add a squeeze of lemon for vitamin C to help absorption but I've read you need 1000mg to do that. Can you add a vitamin C supplement to get a high enough level?

I've been eating black pudding. I will try your Morrocan liver recipe when you post it.

Britangerine profile image
Britangerine in reply toFancyPants54

I’ll see how I get on. But when I’ve eaten liver in the past I’ve eaten between 150-200g in one sitting, maybe cos I’m greedy :/

A pound of chicken livers usually serves 4, so 100g is an approx serving size. And I’m not having it every day... if I need to adjust I will.

My sister supplements with Pukka natural vitamin c & she swears by it so I think I may check that out :)

I honestly now believe that the only time I should depend on the NHS is a life or death situation. The NHS are overstretched anyway and I’d rather deal & research my day-to-day health issues myself especially testing, monitoring and nutrition.

Feel free to join in or follow the experiment. I’ve started today :)

I made nettle infusions and mine went way up! Actual nettles, just forage! Pop into a mason jar, cover in boiled water & leave to sit for +7hrs , drink cooled or add a wee hot drop.
