I thought moving to NDT and regaining my health with now decent t3 levels would somehow make up for years on levo BUT..
Following my last post and joint swelling, ive just returned from the orthopaedic surgeon consultant. He suspects cartlidge wear and general knee joint wear as the cause of my knee swelling. Im 49. I have just looked up low t3 and found many links to the need for t3 for cartilage and bone health. I was on Levo for 17 years and never in full health but still managing to keep a reasonable level of physical activity. Im now really concerned (and angry) that years of being prescribed Levo and not having the necessary levels of t3 has caused this problem.
Would love to hear from anyone more knowledgeable or been affected by the same problem. Also what other health problems might be ahead for those of us due to years on levo?
Just 2 of the relevant studies I've found since returning home!
I think you’ve helped me to understand how come my knee problems reversed with addition of T3, not as bad as yours though. I feel better with NDT combo T3. It just boosts the T3. And I think the T3 in T3 tablets is different, for me anyway, brings clearer thinking and better resilience to stress. Wishing you all the best x
Thanks, that's interesting. I'm better with stress now on NDT. My combination is adding 25mg Levo to ndt. I do use adrenal cocktail in times of stress and also use ashwaganda, both seem to help. Pleased you have found what works for you with adding t3 x
Interesting. I am new to this group and now have posts all over the place as I suck up all the insights on here!
I’m hypo for about 13 years now, levels fluctuate, and last year I became v unwell. Amongst lots of other horrible things I had really bad knees, creaky and crunchy and sore. Hubby was laughing at me as he’s 10 years my senior and his don’t sound like that!
As I got better so did they but a few weeks ago I was unwell again and the bad knees were back! Now improving slightly.
Until then I had never considered the two related but as I’ve been a LOT less active for the last 6 months, I know it’s not from something I’ve done.
I’m sorry I can’t offer any help or advice but just know you’re not alone!
Thanks for your reply, its good to hear im not alone but not that we are both suffering. I think it's a consideration, if hypo is a factor and necessary levels of t3 are needed to prevent this. I will hopefully know more about the mechanical cause soon and see if it can be linked. I'm going to up my ndt by a 1/4 grain and see if I have some improvement too.
Sorry to hear you've had other problems I just read your post previous post about endometriosis, I have had that too over the years and finally found it went away with the use of natural progesterone.
Ooh. What format was the natural progesterone in? Does it cause other effects??
I’m hoping they’ll tell me it isn’t Endo but just in case.
Yes, I have long thought that more careful control of thyroid meds was needed - the impact on the rest of the body must be massive. And that was before I found this site!! Now I know!
it's utrogestan, so a 100mg capsule. Wild yam! had a prescribed by a gyno/meno clinic a few years back alongside an oestrogen patch, but I don't use the patches often.
Hi Magne17, I am the same as you, on Levo for years, getting worse and worse, now on prescribed T3 and steadily improving. My knees though seem to have developed problems since switching from T4 to T3! Just age-related I thought.
Please, would you PM me more about your progesterone, especially if it was from wild yam, because I am vegan and don't want any poor horses tied up all day so that I can have the oestrogen from their urine.
Hi there, thanks for your post.Ive actually upped my dose of NDT a little and my swelling has reduced a lot over the last week. Still got knee trouble but will see what MRI shows. I'm going to monitor and track my dose over the last 4 years and how it corresponds to episodes of knee swelling. I'll put up a new post about it when I know more. will dm you progesterone name x
