Also if anyone knows of anything natural that would work other than restasis?
I use Systane Ultra eye drops (on prescription), it's the only thing that doesn't irritate my eyes.
Thank you!
Hi, I haven't heard of Restasis or MSM.
My prescription is Carbomer Eye Gel 0.2% w/w, One drop in each eye 3 or 4 times a day. I have only needed them twice a day though. They are better for dry eye because the gel is longer lasting.
Hi, you must have been given Restasis because you have a severe form of dry eye? Restasis is cyclosporine, a prescription product which can only be given by an ocular specialist, and which deals with chronic inflammation which causes dry eye. Please be aware that over the counter drops such as Systane etc. will not deal with inflammation but rather just create a soothing eye environment.
I have had this condition the most irritating feeling of having one eye running all the time. This had no side affects for me and both eyes are great. Prior I had plugs permanent put in but with both my eyes don't drip anymore Great medicine finally something worked!
You need to find out if your dry eye(s) are caused by the oil ducts in your eyelids clogging up. When the eyelid oil ducts clog up, your eyes are not getting enough oil mixed with the eyes tears (saline solution). with insufficient oil mixed with the tears, the tears dryout and cause dry eyes. Any good optometrist or ophthalmologist should be able to determine this and recommend a more natural solution. I was told to place a warm moist compress over my eyes for about ten minutes a couple of times per day. There are a couple of compress products on the market, such as Thermal On, that help with Dry Eye.
All I know is that eye drops need to be preservative free.
My original prescription products were not, and I struggled on being diagnosed with blepharitis, after waiting months for a referral to an eye consultant. He told me how to bathe and clean my eyes, giving me the impression that it was something I had to live with, but with due care and attention it might not happen too often. My suggestion that could it be something to do with the ointment I'd been prescribed was dismissed and he actually rewrote a new prescription for the same drops??? I came home and when I was able to focus, researched and purchased Moorfields - preservative free drops. Never had any more problems - advised my doctor to change my prescription and suggested she contact the " specialist " she had referred me to so other people might not waste their time, whilst in pain,
This one
For dry eyes it was recommended that I take a cotton-bud and wash the inside edge (near the lashes) of my eye with baby shampoo, every morning for a week. This cleans debris that has accumulated from the environment and has blocked the tear ducts. It works.
I have not done this for some time now and can feel my eyes drying up again...so I need to go through this process again soon.
Restasis didn’t work for me but. Xiidra has been l life changer. (I see you are in the USA so Xiidra is avail for you). I use one drop in each eye am and pm. The only OTC drops I use are Systane Ultra, High Performance Preservative Free.
If you search on Xiidra, you will find a discount code to obtain it lessss expensively each month and possibly even a free first month.
Its only avail via prescription so ask your ophthalmologist. I’ve been using the drops for over a year now. Xiidra works to repair the tear membrane and has made it possible for me to comfortably wear my contact lenses. I have Sjogrens Syndrome - do you know what is causing your dry eyes?
Some people are helped by using MSM if they can process sulfates. I don't think it would hurt to try. Sometimes dry eyes are due to a vitamin A deficiency. Omega 7's may also help. Another avenue is that dry eyes are caused by oil glands which may be plugged. Do you have Blepharitis? I use a pharmaceutical castor oil on the eyelids at night.
My Naturopath put me on a supplement made by Metagenics called SPM active. Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators. It's an active fractionated marine lipid concentrate with vitE developed in a way that enables it to get into the very small blood vessels. She gave it to me to reduce generalized inflammation. I had been on restasis and came off it because it just burned too much to put it in and it didn't work. After being on the SPM I realized I didn't have eye pain anymore. Also my gums stopped bleeding. First thing in the morning my eyes might be a bit red and stiff, once I get up and moving they are fine. No more tearing, itching, burning. If I stop taking them they bother me and I don't feel great generally. They are pricey, but if you order online and do auto ship you save 20%. For me it's worth it. You just have to order through a physician so ask your doctor to set up an account. I'm sure it's free, then you order through him. Game changer for me. Good luck, I know how painful it can be
I've not got a proper diagnosis for my thyroid yet but have dry eyes. I use the optase mask - it's wonderful and very soothing. It can be reused (I think they recommend renewing every 6 months) - its about £10 at a well known chemist. You just microwave for 20 seconds before using for about 10 minutes. My optician recommended it to me
Diana58,
I have Sjogrens (30 years) and I have tried and been prescribed everything it seems, known to man, with not much luck. But, I had an epiphany a couple of years ago. I noticed that when I started taking my milk thistle capsule 1/ 1000 mg along with 2/ 400 IU (natural, d-alpha) Vitamin E or Mixed Tocopherol gels at night, I woke up with moist eyes like before Sjogrens. It seems that helping my liver is helping the dryness.
I still have to use saline mist for nasal passages and moisturizing drops in my eyes, and drink extra, but not nearly as often. Just a few times a day compared to before when it seemed like that was all I did.
It may not help you at all, but it is good for overall health and it is much easier on the budget than a lot of the Rx meds. It may be worth a try.
**Give it a couple of weeks to take effect.** .....The key is taking it at night before bed. Around 2-5 AM is when the liver is working its hardest.
All the best😊
I had terrible dry eye I used systane. I also used Restasis. My doctor finally put in permanent eye plug and I use. a drop of restashis
