Lugol's Solution

I was just wondering if anyone has had to take Lugol's solution before a TT op. I'm due to have mine in May. Does taking it have any side effects? I have a suspect nodule on my thyroid so they're taking it out. Been feeling rotten with aching joints and generally unwell. Hopefully will be able to get back to normal after op.

Hi there ! - have been reading through earlier posts of yours and cannot see your results when you were diagnosed Hyper - just wondered if you have them and if anti-bodies were checked :-) Apologies if I have missed them !

Pardon my ignorance but why are they removing the whole thyroid because of one suspect nodule ? Have they done a FNB - fine Needle Biopsy ?

Sorry not sure how iodine will benefit you before surgery - hopefully someone will be along soon to help with some advice.

I had a FNB, but they said the results were unclear as to wether the nodule was cancerous or not. I have Grave disease and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a year ago. I've been struggling with symptoms despite being on 125mcg levo and 40mg carbimazole. I don't have any copies of results only an old one from the Endo which said my TSH was 6.7 with a normal FT4 of 17.4 and to increase my dose of Levi to 125mcg. I want the operation anyway as I'm so fed up with feeling so I'll all the time. I'm a self employed domestic cleaner and at the moment have been unable to work, so just want to get back to some sort of normality.

Inorganic iodide (Lugol solution) decreases the synthesis of thyroid hormone and release of hormone from the thyroid in the short term. ... Iodine also reduces thyroid cellularity and vascularity and therefore is used in the preparation of patients for thyroidectomy. So what the Lugol is doing is to reduce thyroid hormone production and close down the vessels and reduce cell size in the thyroid temporarily to help to more accurately perform the removal of any tissue without harming good tissue.
