Menopause? Or not?

Hi,

Before i was diagnosed with hashimotos disease i had had 3 weeks of erratic menstruation but much lower than usual monthly periods. I put this down to my age and menopause ( 52) but after diagnosis periods returned to monthly occurrence for couple yrs. Recently i had light but consistant blood flow 4 8 days and almost constant lower abdominal ' period pain'. This was after absence of 4 mnths- yipee finally stoped. Could this b thyroid or menopause as ive had several other symtoms reoccour- cold feet, lethergy, mental confusion & requested another blood test. Have others had probs with menstruation related to thyroid probs? As Gp and the Neurologist (i have epilepsy) when i mentioned it automatically put it down to age and menopause......although until my thyroid probs my periods were very regular and predictable. Thanks

I think that, given your age, menopause is likely, but you'd need to have your estradiol and progesterone levels tested to confirm it.

I recently read that the average age for a woman in our part of the world to have her last period is 51. What you describe sounds like typical transitional problems, and it's likely that your periods will stop soon.

I think fluctuations in menstrual cycles are common in the early stages of menopause, but hashimotos can also have fluctuating levels of thyroid hormones at this time of great change, so it may be useful to obtain copies of all your results and post them on this forum so that knowledgeable members will be able to comment.

It's a closely entwined web and although I had been diagnosed with Hashis for many years before the menopause, it definitely affected my thyroid levels and medications had to be altered. It's always best to get copies of test results anyway so you can keep a record and see what level you were at when you felt best. Good luck with it all 🍀 x
