I’m 41 and struggling to get my doctor to listen to me. My dad suffers with and under active thyroid as did my Grandmother. I have so many symptoms and more but the blood test has come back as ok. I’ve asked for further tests but they are reluctant, saying I’m fine. Recently my health has deteriorated quite rapidly to the point where my heart beats so rapidly I struggle to walk up the stairs and I have a constant feeling of a lump in my throat. These are quite new symptoms (in the last month).
Can anyone point me in the direction of medical professionals who maybe able to help?
Any help or advice would be greatfully received.
Thank you in advance

Thank you. I phoned emergency Doc today as I nearly blacked out whilst driving. My heart is trying to beat out of my chest and her response was “I don’t know what you want me to do”. I did mention other tests and she was quite dismissive. Surely the genetic link and my symptoms should push a referral through? I feel helpless and very unwell and thinking just going private would be better. I’ve got worse very quickly and now struggling to get up a flight of stairs.
Before you go private - either go to A@E the next time you have these symptoms telling them that you can’t breatheand have them do the blood tests right there....
In the meantime get some blood tests done. There is a good one on Medicheck circa £79 might be cheaper tomorrow as I think they do a discount on Thursdays?
If you go to a private Dr without recent blood tests then they will run the tests and they can cost a LOT more.
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.
All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)
If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).
About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's
Thank you so much. I’ve had more info in the last 2 hours on this site than I’ve had from Dr in the last 30 yrs! I have been showing symptoms for that long, which I believe is a sign of genetic problems and the Thyroid. My Dad was diagnosed at 43. I’ve ordered from Medichecks so hopefully will have some answers soon. Thanks again I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to comment.
I’ve ordered the Home blood kit but also seen comments about fasting before I do this. Only, now I want the info, I can’t find the comments. Does anyone know if there is a better time to do the bloods? And how long since eating? I presume this is the fasting I’ve read about?
It's a lot to take in, I know. Go re-check SlowDragon's post above - it covers all the bases. Best time for blood draws is the morning, first thing, when TSH is highest.
I agree with previous posters - if you get a severe attack of symptoms go to A&E.
Thank you. I keep reading and re reading and it is all really confusing, but I am so glad I found this site, by accident. Hopefully I’ll have some answers soon.
