Giving up on Levothyroxine + T3 replacement

Hi all,

Been on NDT for 3 years previous to changing back due to shortages/ doctor problems.

The last 6 months I've been on T4 + T3 synthetic replacement, labs all come back fine but I've got a lot of old symptoms I haven't had for many years.

Symptoms:

Lethargic and always napping

Slurred speech/ stutter & forgetting words

Prickly heat/ stinging sensation with hives all over the upper body (seems to be related to temperature change)

Nightmares almost every night which ruins my sleep

Stomach issues (never hungry but feel nauseous all the time)

Severe weight loss (10kg lost in a month, now maintaining a skinnier weight)

And probably more.

Anyone else suffer on T4+T3 synthetic? Do you think it's worth going back to NDT seeing as I was symptom-free on that?

Who says the labs are fine? Have you actually seen them? Could be they're not as fine as all that - remember, very few doctors fully understand lab results - and you could very well need an increase in dose. :)

I've got the labs on my blood results spreadsheet and they're all within the correct "range" but also within the range of when I normally feel fine from my own experience also.

Might be idea to get blood sugar checked out. My hypo mum had similar symptoms, endo always trying to reduce levo saying her weight loss was clear sign of being over medicated. She had in fact at the age of 73 developed LADA Diabetes One and it was only discovered on being rushed to hospital when she nearly died. Luckily she was ok as they managed to stabilise her. She has been told that this form of adult onset diabetes one is becoming more common although they don't know why.

Return to NDT please. I have never suffered any problems to do with stomach/gut problems in my life and when I tried adding some T3 to my NDT I felt sick and had stomach aches all morning. Before I had my thyroid removed I was not on any medication I was given Levo in various doses over 8 months I was so ill that I could hardly stand up. I joined this site and self medicate on NDT now I feel well and I am 71 years old. It took 2 years to sort but now everything is fine again.

Back to NDT for me then.

I’ve had these symptom before and the only correlation is that back then I was on synthetic. I’m going to get a full bloods anyway to rule out any other ilness like diabetes but I’m pretty certain this is thyroid related.

Thanks for your help everyone!

Good Luck

I agree. If NDT is what you feel best on you should be on that!
