If you need to choose a thyroid surgeon, find out how many thyroid operations they do each year. Apparently you get a better result if you choose a high volume surgeon. I think they need to be doing more than 40 a year to have enough experience. You need someone experienced enough to detect parathyroid glands and save them.

Can you say a little more as to why the surgeon has made that decision? It may help to give you better advice of what to do or expect next.

That doesn't sound right. I'm assuming he has done tests. Have you any results from blood tests for TSH, FT4 and FT3 that you can post? Often when treated a goitre can disappear, my small one did. As a surgeon he may not be up to date with things. If he takes it out you will need to be treated anyway after the operation. Has he said anything about what would happen post op? He's not giving me any confidence either! Add you bloods and let's see if that helps us to see where he's coming from. We see many doctors not experts at looking at results. Many think that if you are in range then you are fine but it's where in the range that matters do he could be giving you poor advice.

Google and open pages of Private Hospitals and search for Endocrinoligist Consultants. This will bring up names and deails of Consultants.

What are the reasons for removing your thyroid gland? The surgeon should have explained exact details for you to choose. What about your previous history regarding your thyroid?

As someone has already explained you must choose and experienced thyroid surgeon with plenty of operations done every year.

The surgen said thats what they do now, i ask "SO THEY DONT KEEP A PIECE anymore he said no.im not on any medication and my thyroid antibodies are working good only got enlarge goiter.

My question was why and you have explained that you have an enlarged goiter and yes they do remove all of the thyroid at once it stops having to have future operations. I was the same as you and not on any medication before my trachea moved due to enlarged goiter.

It's a shock having to have this operation done but please don't be nervous about asking for the surgeon with the most experience. Also ask him about your parathyroid glands there are four and need to be retained. These are for your calcium mine were replanted in my arm and back. They are only the size of a grain of rice so very tiny.

If after you have the operation please come back on here for more help.
