Hi guys,

Have been symptomatic for quite a few years I believe...I am seeing my gp again tomorrow I hope he is going to listen in light of these blood results! I have gained 5 stone in 5 yrs I am exhausted my brain is foggy my hair is falling out! My bloods revealed TSH- 5 ( top of range 4.2) free 4-10 ( range 11-22), my vit d was also 47 ( range 50 -300) my gp said who hasn't got a low vit d in Yorkshire in Feb! My bloods have been graphed & the decline has been consistent over the last 5 yrs, I can see from them when I last felt better when my TSH was around 1.2. Really hope they treat tomorrow as I don't know what I will do,I can't carry on like this for much longer 😡😡 any advice welcome....

Did you get your blood tests taken at the very earliest a.m. fasting (you can drink water) and if you were taking thyroid hormones you'd allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose and test.

In the UK it is suggested that our TSH reach 10 before being diagnosed. Some will prescribe if it goes past the top of the range which is around 5. Whereas in other countries it is diagnosed if it goes above 3.

Ask for a Full Thyroid Function test as you feel awful. It is TSH, T3, T4, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. Antibodies are important and if you have them you'd have an Autoimmune Thyroid Disease. GP should also test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate. Tick off your symptoms but he may not even look at it as they know none anyway and will only go by the TSH alone.

Take the Toft article that states patients feel best with a TSH under 1 and free t4 and free T3 in the top third of the range - admin can give you a copy. Toft is a highly respected endocrinologist and physician to the queen when she is in Scotland so he is not someone they can poo poo although your vitamin d idiot of a GP probably will. It is his job to rectify your vitamin d deficiency and he might like to make a start on helping all his other patients who are vit d deficient too! What a stupid comment and a total dereliction of duty. Let’s blame it all on location and do nothing. I presume he has not agreed to a diagnosis of hypothyroidism either.

Your results and symptoms clearly demonstrate you are hypothyroid and hormone replacement therapy is imperative to improve your condition. I thought you were on Levothyroxine already but it looks like you have not got any treatment yet, sorry. Does anyone else in your family have it? If so lay that fact on with a trowel.

Is there a different GP you could see who Is more sympathetic as some will start treatment if you have obvious symptoms? Waiting for a TSH of 10 is an abomination and plain cruel all thanks to our stupid college of endocrinologists. Anywhere else you’d be treated with a TSH of 3.5.

If you get nowhere I would seriously consider self medication - why suffer when it is utterly pointless and very awful.

Oh thank you for this! I saw my doc today & he said that he accepts my levels are all out of range but I should wait to be retested in 6 wks,if they remain the same he will then treat!!! I was shocked....I said I'm feeling so unwell & he said well if you've been that unwell for this amount of time another 6 wks won't matter, and that is,I swear to god the truth, did not even address my vit d..... I feel soooo low and very tearful but I have changed my doctors this afternoon but will take 24hrs b4 I can see anyone,to add insult to injury he was running 40 mins late no apologies or anything, just who do they think they are?? An elderly lady went to the receptionist and asked for a urine sample bottle as the gp requested a sample she was told to go and buy one from the chemist for 40p & bring it back as they ain't free any more,I couldn't believe my ears. Anyway I digress..my anti bodies where less than 10 as I had that tested privately 2 wks ago, I beginning to think I'm going mad 😡 could my increase in weight be causing the out of range TSH & t4 I really don't know any more😫

I wish I could make him hypothyroid for 6 weeks and refuse him medication he’d be on his knees begging for it within a day. Is he a doctor or a torturer? I know what I’d like to do with that lady’s sample 😬. I hope you get a more sympathetic one - tell them you cannot work you feel so ill and you need to be able to function properly. Plus ask for help with vitamin d deficiency they should be treating it not ignoring it. There are NICE guidelines they should follow. Admin should have links or a copy of what is recommended.

It will cause weight gain because you do not have enough thyroxine to convert food into energy and it becomes fat instead.
