Alcohol Intolerance Testing / Gluten testing

I have Hashimoto's. I have been diagnosed since last August (2017) and I am wondering if anyone has gotten Alcohol or Gluten testing done since becoming hypo? It seems like a huge fight with my doctor to get any tests done unless they are critical.

I get horrible horrible hangovers and I am only 23. It is so bad that to me drinking is just never worth it. I really want to find out if this is all in my head or if I am actually allergic / intolerant. Or if say I cant have wine but gin is OK?

I am also nervous to go completely gluten free without knowing the effects as I have heard people that were never allergic to gluten went gluten free for 6 months an now develop antibodies and gluten resistance?

I have Hashimoto’s and did a gluten sensitivity test privately.

It came back negative, but if you have Hashimoto’s, it’s highly likely you suffer from leaky gut.

Whenever I ate bread, wheatbix anything with gluten I had terrible popping in my tummy, tummy cramps and bloating, it got so painful I couldn’t move.

Days after my tummy felt bruised.

Anyway I decided to cut gluten out altogether and I’ve felt so much better, not just my tummy but my concentration levels, moods etc.

I’ve now been working with a nutritionist and had further in depth test and it has now come back gluten intolerance and dairy as well.

I don’t drink alcohol so can’t comment, but some alcohol can contain gluten (beers).

Perhaps you could try cutting out and see how you feel.

Best wishes

If you are going to be tested to see if you are coeliac or at least gluten intolerant then definitely don’t go on a gluten free diet before that because the test won’t work.

I’ve never heard that going gluten free when you aren’t coeliac could cause you to develop antibodies and gluten resistance, but I know that being GF has drastically reduced my thyroid antibodies so I wouldn’t want to eat gluten containing foods anyway.

Can’t help with your hangovers - I only ever have the odd glass of wine so hangovers aren't a problem.

Full in this assessment and take the recommendation at the end to your GP - it will say Coeliac UK recommend you be tested, and gives more support to your request:

isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk/o...

You can get home testing kits for about £15 in some pharmacies (like Lloyd's), but i don't know how good they are, or pay for private coeliac tests via medichecks/blue horizon.

I have been advised it's not a good idea to give up gluten entirely if you don't have to, because you can develop a gluten intolerance (it wouldn't cause coeliac disease/antibodies, because that is down to genetics). However, you'll never know whether you should cut out gluten entirely unless you try it. Give it a go for 1-3 months and see how you feel.

76% of those with Hashimotos improve on a gluten free diet.
