Bleeding and discharge

I’m on the mini pill and have been for months. I can’t tell you the last I had a proper period as sometimes in a month I can bleed at the beginning and then sometimes a week after again and sometimes go months with out bleeding. However me and my partner had sex and later on that day I had spots of bleeding and then it stopped and then the next day I woke up fine but later on I had spots of blood again and then brown discharge. Just wondering if anyone know what it could be?

Hi Sarah

Im not medically qualified just talking from personal experience.

When you 1st start a pill there can be breakthrough bleeding while your body adjusts to the new hormones. That said this normally settles, I would strongly recommend booking an appointment with your Gp or Practice Nurse - dont worry it could just be a case that the brand you are using does not agree with you and they may try an alternative

Hello and thank you for replying. The thing is I started my period at the age of 10 so ever since then I have been on the pill but in 2016 I fell pregnant whilst being on it. When I had my little boy it wasn’t the easiest labour as they used forceps and had to stick me back up,I lost a lot of blood but after having my little boy I went back on the pill and for months it was no good for me as I was bleeding for weeks so the doctor put me on a different one and at first I was still bleeding but eventually my body got used to it and stopped. I was bleeding on the 11th February and stopped bleeding on the 16th feb. Yesterday morning me and my partner had sex and I was fine all day but later on I had spots of bleeding and then that night it had stopped, today I woke up fine but again I have had spots of blood and brown discharge. I don’t have to wear a pad as it’s not a lot,it only seems to be a little bit on a pantyliner.

Hi Sarah, I used to have terrible symptoms with the pill. Have you ever considered the Mirena coil? For some it can stop periods all together. Compared to any type if pill it hasn't given me any symptoms.

Try to speak with your Dr our nurse if you have concerns about the discharge.

They have offered me that but I don’t want it. I’d like to try the injection and see how that goes. I just don’t know what’s wrong with me. The last week I have had sickness throughout the day but haven’t actually been sick.

I have just read your previous posts, did you go to the Dr about the weight loss? Did you get the diagnosis of PA?

Sorry so many questions but I wonder if it is all linked.

Im afraid I know nothing about PA.

I have been to see the nurse twice, first time I went she sent me for different blood tests and they all came back fine apart from my liver that was slightly abnormal. Second time I went back to see I gained a pound in over two weeks. I go back to see her two weeks to see if I have gained or lost any more weight.

I think it would me really useful for you to post those blood tests results (with ranges) on here. There are many good people here that will give you good advice about the results (what the practice says is fine on here they will often tell you a very different story).

Dont wait to see the nurse in 2 weeks book an appointment tomorrow and tell them whats been happening. You could ask for a copy of your bloods while there.

I’ll ring the doctors tomorrow and see if they have any appointments with the nurse. I don’t know my blood results but I’ll definitely ask for a copy and post them on here, thank you very much for your help.

Hi there i have tried various pills over the years and the mini pill was awful for me-the chances are the brownish discharge could be old blood(oxidised) nothing to worry over but have you had regular smears? Also if worried your local sexual health clinic can help-they can do tests aswell. But failing that see your gp. Good luck.🌟

Yeah I think I’ll come of the pill and try the injection. Am only 21 and the age for a smear test is 25 I might ask the nurse if I can have one though. I’m terrified in case it’s something serious

Sweetheart come straight off the pill.

Ask to have a smear and a sexual health check up immediately.

I don’t want to scare you but if this was anything serious then time has passed with Nurses messing around. Blood tests? FFS the most obvious thing to do was a smear and a sexual health check.

It’s very quick - the procedures are combined so at the same time as the smear they will swab. Ask for the smallest speculum.

💋💋

I was on the progesterone - only pill and it didn’t work for me as naturally my levels have always been low and I had similar symptoms to those which you have.

I have binned my mini pills. I’ll definitely ask for a smear test tomorrow I’m just terrified in case it comes back as cervical cancer as I’ve done some research to my symptoms. Would I need a sexual health check up as I’ve been with my partner for over 5years?

Helena877 profile image

I’d ask for a sexual health check up as this gets everything tested in one go if there is any issue with you being under the age of 25, but given your symptoms they should just do a smear.

It is easy to get scared about cervical cancer and that’s probably the worst thing it could be (highly unlikely , but that’s why it’s imperative that you have the smear test) so have the smear and get peace of mind.

Aw okay thank you I’ll ask for both Just so I get checked for everything. I’m trying my hardest not to think negative it’s just more scare when you have a child and you want to be as healthy as you can be for them. I’ve just read up on the mini pill that I was on it was called ‘noriday’ and one of the side effects is ‘irregular bleeding’ so I’m hoping what am experiencing is due to the pill and nothing serious

It very likely is down to the mini pill.

My friend’s niece had a similar issue recently; although she was passing large clots throughout the month. It turned out to be just the pill she was on and nothing serious.

Most cancer cases are when people have not had the smears they were told to attend for years.

I hope so, I really appreciate you commenting. It’s calmed me down being able to talk to some one about it and getting there advice. Oh I see,I’ve been lucky because I’ve not been passing large clots.

You will be fine honestly-dont be alarmed things are easily sorted sarah-but think carefully about thevinjection because once its in theres no coming out if you have side effects, what about a implant that you can have out? Just a thought!! Luckily enough im 47 now and do not use contraception now as my chances of being pregnant are becoming less and less-but i know it can still happen 4 in a 100. 😊😊

Sarah1996 in reply to Rmichelle

I’ve just read up on he injection and I won’t be able to have it due to the unexplained bleeding. I think I’m going to come of contraceptive all together and see if my body goes back to normal and have regular periods. I’m still going to go see the nurse and ask if I can have a smear. At least if I get a smear I’ll know what the results are and if they come back clear then I know it was probably the mini pill making my body react that way.

Hi Sarah1996

Did you have any joy getting and apt to see a Doctor?

Sarah1996 profile image
Sarah1996 in reply to mtcorr

Hello and couldn’t get one for today so I got one for Wednesday

mtcorr profile image
mtcorr in reply to Sarah1996

Good be warned that smears are not normally performed on anyone under 25 (this is out of the drs control). But if the Gp felt there was anything sinister going on a smear would not be required for a referral (as the results can take over 2 weeks).

What they may do is send you for an ultrasound or an Full blood count blood test this is a quicker way of indicating what is happening in a body

I asked about the PA as on their forum other ladies seemed to be having similar problems to your own.

Before your appointment write down all your symptoms and what has been happening it is so easy to forget something when you are there.

Try not to worry as the mini pill seems to be renowned for breakthrough bleeding:

Progestogen-only pills and bleeding disturbances.

Abstract

The progestogen-only pill (POP), minipill, is quite an effective second line contraceptive. Despite this, it is used relatively infrequently except during lactation. The main reason for this is that women on POP often have abnormal bleeding patterns, with an increased frequency of bleeding, lengthened cycles, breakthrough bleeding, spotting and prolonged bleeding. These menstrual disturbances are the most common quoted reason for discontinuation in up to 25% of users.

Best of luck and please keep us updated
