Thyroid pain

Hello all,

Just wondered how many people with Hashimoto’s experience pain in their thyroid as part of a flare? I’ve just been diagnosed, but I’ve had episodes of pain for a couple of years now, combined with intolerance to cold, weight issues, fatigue and migraine- but Thyroid function has always been deemed ‘adequate’. I just wondered if thyroid pain was a common symptom of Hashimoto’s?

Many thanks 💐

Can you add your latest test results

For full Thyroid evaluation TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies.

Plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12.

Essential to test thyroid antibodies, FT3 plus vitamins

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

Are you already on strictly gluten free diet as you Hashimoto's?

If not you need to consider this

Hashimoto's often affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone working

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly.

Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's gut and gluten connection is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first

Hi,

Yes, I had intermittent tenderness and discomfort in the thyroid region before I was diagnosed. This was in fact the reason I asked for a thyroid function test. I am now on 50mcg Levothyroxine which is probably not optimal yet - I still get the same kind of discomfort now and again but very much less often than before.

Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes

Caroline
