Question for Hashimoto's sufferers please. Have you had both your Tonsils removed AND your Appendix taken out?

Hello Everybody,

I was wondering just how many people had either had both removed or just the one?

Several people I have spoken to with thyroid issues and bowel issues can say yes to both.

I had my appendix removed 13 years ago, long before being with my new wonderful GP. While chewing the cud with him, trying to unravel the underlying issues I have associated with Hashimoto's, I thought I would mention this fact.

I did so because if what I have read from so many different books and articles as I felt it was important. Upon mentioning this fact he pricked up his ears and was most interested and said 'Heavens, you have lost a lot of lymphatic tissue haven't you!'

The poor appendix as an organ has been much maligned for a long time. Far from being a vestigial organ left over from our evolution when we were grubbing around in some mud pool, it plays a vital role in our Immune system. This tremendous discovery has only come about in the last few years. The research is particularly mentioned in an excellent book written by a young German Dr. by the name of Julia Ender's.

In it she explains the vital role of the appendix and says anybody who has had it removed needs to supplement their diet with fermented foods.

By taking fermented kefir I know I am influencing my whole body to great effect.

Therefore, having realised just how many people I know that have issues either diagnosed or not for Thyroid, but ALSO have lost their appendix, I am curious to know how many of us here in this forum might be in a similar position?

I look forward to your replies πŸ˜ƒ

I have hypothyroidism but never had my appendix out Poppy. But they did take my gall bladder out.....which was definitely a good decision!

Can you explain why it was good? A friend abroad had hers taken out and it hasn't made her life that much easier..

I am curious to know.

Many thanks.

actually having the gallbladder taken out is not the best option. We need fats to be broken down - without bile and a functioning gallbladder how do we achieve it. naturalendocrinesolutions.c...

I had my tonsils out when I was about 6 or 7 years old. They were giving me trouble and in those days (early 60's) it was the done thing.......so off to Great Ormond Street I was sent!

The appendix is behaving so far. :O

Thanks for the reply. Yes I know, I had them out at 5yrs too, in the late 60's.

Many thanks

I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was a child too. My mum recalls the surgeon telling her they were the biggest he had ever seen, which makes me think there was already some sort of inflammation going on in my body at that point!

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat

Definitely, they will have been attempting to contain the infection but sadly overwhelmed. At least we both had them removed because they were in such a bad state...

Going back earlier to the 30s and 40s it was standard to remove them just for the sake of it. My mother had her perfectly good tonsils taken out!

The presumptive attitude that Nature will have endowed us with something toxic or superfluous never ceases to amaze me!

Thank you.

Had my tonsils and adenoids out aged 4 after numerous rounds of tonsillitis and antibiotics (presumably upsetting gut bacteria balance)

I had my tonsils taken out when I was about 25 after continually suffering from tonisilitis since the age of about 20. I know realise that was down to my thyroid not being treated properly and wish I had known then what I do now! It took me weeks to get over the operation and it was so painful.

All that happened afterwards was the constant tonsilitis turned into sinusitis, and it was only after starting to take T3 and started a mostly sugar free diet that it stopped. I suspect if I had been doing this before I would never have had so many problems with tonsilitis too. Oh well!

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply to AlisonL

That is not quite all the story..but quitting sugar is the clue... Candida Albicans demands sugar, it gives us sugar cravings.

If you brew your own Probiotic Kefir it will beat Candida further into submission! You should give it a go.

It has done wonders for me almost too many to mention and I have only been on it since end of October.

My grandmother also had to have her tonsils out because she almost got sepsis from they were so infected and she too was 25 at the time. She also said how painful it was.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks, yes I agree. I should have also said that I know about candida and have definitely suffered from it in the past, but it has greatly improved since my diet change, but also the addition of T3. I have dabbled with kefir every now and again too so know it's wonderful stuff!

Hi Poppy..

I too suspect I might be suffering to candida. It would be very helpful to know how you treated/suppressed yours.

Kind regards

I had my appendix removed at 17 - gut TB & Crohns at 27 - Gall bladder out around 35 - Hashi's diagnosed at 59. Now 71 😊 - and well.

Hubby had tonsils and appendix out and has Hashi's - doing well for almost 79 😊

How interesting. You survivor You! Both of you, well done.

A dear friend now 81 had TB as a child, only survived due to being shipped literally, with diplomatic posting back to the States where she had antibiotics to save her life. In later life she has developed gut issues too, ulcerative colitis.... She is keeping it at bay and is in good health, also brewing her Probiotic kefir that I sent her on a daily basis.

Thank you.

Had to jump in. Antibiotics were so popular here when I was younger I remember my doctor always giving me a prescription for a "Z-pak" to take with me when I travelled out of the country 'just in case'. I always filled it. The sad thing is that if I had gotten sick elsewhere in the world and not insisted on being so "American' I may have gotten better care where I was! BTW never got sick abroad! And I ate EVERTHING. American scare tactics LOL

Good, at least you have your appendix.

Sorry to hear that you too have lost our valuable tonsils.

Hope you are looking after your gut with kefir too 😁

Thanks for your reply,

I believe I was well rid of the tonsils.

I don't use kefir and I don't have gut issues :)

I had my appendix out and now that you mention it my health thyroid wise has been worse!

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply to DeeBDee

There is a huge link!

I was quite surprised at what I read in Julia Ender's excellent book.

She recommends that anybody who has lost their appendix must supplement their diet with fermented foods for their Probiotic content, as the appendix plays a vital role in the Immune System's function.

A very dear friend, the mother of my godson had her appendix out at 18 and within a few years her health went downhill. She eventually became coeliac; had a husband who thought it was all attention seeking, so he had no sympathy or help there...to cut a long story short she became so ill, so unable to eat she would live off black coffee and cigarettes. All her problems stemmed from the appendix operation. Sadly for a number of reasons she died at 46 a few years back. Her health practitioners failed her completely; she had terrible Candida but was only ever given cream! They didn't pick up any of the signs, there were do many. I could see her symptoms were so like mine; I was convinced she had thyroid issues, but my advice was not acted upon. The coroner's report recorded, Crohn's, diabetes and serious hip issues amongst other things. Nutrition is everything.

We all need to give primary importance to our Nutrition and gut biome health, everything else will improve!

If you don't take Probiotic Kefir, you should consider it; it's not only for people who have gut issues, but it boosts our Immune System because 85% of our Immune System is housed in the gut.

Come to think of it I had been on Thyroid since 1984 and the real sx that I am dealing with now began about 6 months-1 year after the 'after-thought' appendectomy and hysterectomy. Interesting!

Hi poppy I had my tonsils out when I was 3 and my appendix when I was 16. I am hypothyroid. That is very interesting! I think I should trial kefir to see if it helps

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply to miss-jo

Thank you for your reply.

It's a double whammy really... because we are robbed of vital lymph tissue when our appendix is removed...but then we are given strong antibiotics without big Probiotic post-antibiotic care. Of course we need antibiotics for serious things like an appendix operation but what we also need is gut biome repair afterwards! The gut biome needs to be re-seeded with the help of live Probiotic cultures. Kefir is ideal for this.

Julia Ender's book is excellent because she was inspired to not only write it but to become a bowel specialist in the first place the due to her own chronic illness as a youngster.

If you wish to PM me your email I can send you my instructions with added photos as a guide.

Kefir is wonderful because it's one of the tools for fixing our damaged gut biome.😊

Wow! Just found this post as I decided to follow you. I was an operating nurse for most of my career and early on I seemed to take on the philosophy 'if it's not working remove it. " Over the years I have come to believe that all our body parts are there for a reason. Sometimes something has to go but I think there is a very cavalier attitude about what our body needs and what is obsolete. To first answer your question yes, I had my tonsils out in 1962. I'm not sure now they needed to go but I was in nursing school and missing clinical time because of strep throats. So the director of nursing students said the tonsils had to go. Interesting reason for surgery!. Then the standard of care (here in the US) re the appendix has become"It's not really necessary so if we're in your abdomen anyway we'll take your appendix out and maybe save you an appendectomy later on in life." So that was removed in 1999 as part of a hysterectomy. Then last year had my gallbladder out for stones. They did offer to try meds to resolve the stones but I have arrived at a point in life where I would rather do almost anything rather than take Big Pharma's drugs. So I had it out (the mini-lap). I have to say mine went well, have had no post op probs and at least there was a medical reason for the surgery. But not for the tonsils and appendix. I never til today heard from any doc that it might be loaded with lymph tissue we might need. Would love to know more about this concept also. (Not to mention how much extra income is generated by insurance companies paying for an extra operation (appendectomy) tacked onto the original operation!!!)

Not either of them, but I've had my gallbladder removed. And I'm very envious that you have a GP who gives you time to chew the cud with him! ;-) Is he taking on new patients by any chance?!

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply to Cooper27

No worries πŸ˜‰. It's still relevant!

That is excellent. It means you have more lymph tissue, which means your immune system is that bit more robust... But kefir for helping to maintain a good standard of gut biome health is well worth considering if you don't already take some form of Probiotic anyway πŸ˜‰.

Lucky you, I wish I had both of mine.

Thankfully I have both intact. However I have a lot of family members who have had their appendix taken out (I suspect they have hypothyroidism too, but they never listen). Reading the comments I am seriously considering making kefir as I do not take any type of probiotic.

Please do. You don't have to be unwell to benefit from it. My mother and brother are fine and have no gut issues but I make it for them too and they report improvements!

PM me your email and I will happily send you my instructions I put together with added photos to help.
