Doctors (especially endos) need retraining!

Hi just reading through all the posts it struck me that we should insist that endos get proper training in treating thyroid diseases. We are told that they are mostly specialists in diabetes! Well if they are having patients referred to them with thyroid conditions, surely they should be trained to treat them? What can we do to get this message across to the powers that be?????? Sorry if this question is terribly naive.

So funny - just saw McDermots post - two below this one - with a campaign to get better service from Endocrinologists for patients with thyroid diseases!!! So someone IS doing something!!!!

Maxxxx,

Endocrinologists are trained in all aspects of the endocrine system. They do receive training in thyroid but most seem to specialise in diabetes rather than specialising in thyroid.

Do you know why clutter, is this due to interest, funding?

ThyroidJ,

Interest, I expect. I wouldn't know whether funding plays any part in doctors choosing specialities.

Thanks for replying Clutter - it just seems logical though that they should specialise in both diabetes AND thyroid if they are going to be treating thyroid patients, otherwise they should refer thyroid patients to other doctors who do specialise.

It just seems to me that time after time people are posting here who have had bad treatment from both GP's and endocrinologists. I can sort of forgive the GP's as they can't possible know everything about every condition but I believe that endocrinologists who specialise in diabetes should not be treating thyroid patients or else they should be forced onto a 10 day training period. Or just read Thyroid UK and learn something!

Maxxxx,

There are doctors who specialise in thyroid. Just doesn't seem that there are too many of them. Just because a doctor specialises in diabetes doesn't mean they are ignorant of thyroid although it certainly seems that some are if you believe some of the posts we read.
