Hi, I have tried to research the best way to take carbimazole (I’m on 10mg at the moment) but I can’t find much information on it.
The info that comes with it changes sometimes says take all at once sometimes split throughout the day, I have asked my gp and he told me to look at the information!
Is it best to take on an empty stomach or after food? Am I best to take 5mg in the morning then 5 mg in the evening or all at once?
I’m trying to avoid the icky unwell feeling I have for around 5 hours of the day after taking it. Thank you for any help 😊

Hi there again lisa when i was on 10mgs i split my dose as carbi has a half life, i took 5mgs in morning and then 5mgs at around 8 at night, i felt better doing that, it does say you can split dose especially if you are on a higher dose of 20mgs but you could try it no harm done, being im on a tiny 2.5mgs i take in one go, you can take carbi after food if you do it on a empty tummy it may add to the sicky feeling.xx
Yer I think I’m going to try split them as I take them at 7 then start to feel ill about 7.15 and can’t eat my breakfast and then start to feel better about 12.30 ish 🙄
Thats ok lisa i did send 3 messages but just as i thought your bloods are not optimal for you, tsh is too high and should be much lower and your frees are in low range and should be mid range. Glad you put out new post so others can respond and help you, they may be in range clinically but not your range to feel great, dont take youre docs word that there normal as they are not!! Try lowering carbi to 5mgs.xxx
Yes that’s what I thought about my tsh and then I couldn’t remember which way round the frees should show!! I’m going to change my carbi to take it in the evening tomoz see if that helps ...do u take your in the morning? Xx
I think I’ll wait until next Friday to decrease just check with the endo (I decreased my dose last time myself but was inbetween endos and felt so awful!)
Give it a whirl it may be ok for you and you may not suffer the sickness? You can even half the dose if you want. I also done that on 10mgs half norning and other half early evening-its a thought.😊
No i haven’t tried, I did think about it but I’ve been a bit scared to not take anything in the morning for a day (there’s too much about thyroid storm online)
I used to take mine early morning. It seemed to last all day for me. but it was a long time ago now as i have had my thyroid out and am now on thyroxine which i also take early morning. Hope this helps. Good luck with your journey.
Yes that’s when I take them I feel fine when I wake up I then take them and feel ill within about 10 mins for about 4 hrs or so 🙄 how r without ur thyroid? Do you have graves?
Im not too bad thankyou and yes i did have graves. i was ok then it came back again and i was very ill so decided to have the thyroid out. its been a year since i had the op. They are trying to balance my dosage of thyroxine still but i am a lot better than i was with the thyroid. I hope you get your meds sorted. you are on a really low dose. I was on 40 mg a day. it made me feel so bloated. thyroxine isnt a problem for me so im happy now
Mooorning, I have actually felt a bit better, more stable over these last couple of days thanks 😊 i might venture out in the car later i just feel quite tired!! I haven’t dropped my dose yet I’ll speak to the endo next Friday. How are you doing? Are you getting more settled on your lower dose? Xx (they still haven’t sorted my messenger out 🙄)
Thats good you feel more stable😊 but 10gs is too high as youre levels are very near the edge of hypo and give it another couple of weeks you could go well over, be careful as dont forget your frees are very bottom range and you can easily tip them under on 10mgs. I hit hypo pretty quick on 10 mgs.😊
I would say my small dose of 2.5 is more settled now as regards to heart palps etc but been taking floravital iron sups so i think alot of probs are connected with iron deficiency, trembles, palps etc so i am hoping that the liquid will sort that. I have scan on thyroid on tues so hoping they will do something with the nodules as i am sure they release more hyper hormones.
Yes same here i am taking a little walk down into town to pick up more bloods if they are ready, it is only a 5 min walk, its a great sunny day here just the job to lift your mood. How do you feel about going to work full time next week are you upto it?
Okies thanks😊...yes I do feel different so hopefully I can drop the dosage ASAP just went and did a few bits in the garden am knackered!!
That’s good that your starting to settle on ur dosage it’s so annoying it takes so long ... I have definitely learned about patients with this!!
Fingers crossed for u for Tuesday 😊hopefully you’ll have a better time of it than you did with your last endo appt.
Is this your results from Friday? Do you know what they are?
I am really nervous about going back full time next week but if I feel like I have these 2 days I think I can cope I just feel so much more relaxed and want to do things !! Hoping it will take my mind off being ill. My doctor said just to try it and if I’m not ok then he will sign me off 😬
Thats re-assuring that doc will sign you off, it takes the pressure off you then.
Went to gps today but they were bloody closed on a half day training-so annoying so i will try again tomorrow. Tuesday is just for another thyroid scan to see if nodules have grown, no endo app till 13th feb but i will transfer after scan to birm and just self medicate till endo app in birms.
Yes i know the feeling the slightest bit of anything energetic exhausts us. One day we will both be wonderwoman spinning around in our hotpants and cape.ha.😅😅
I was told to split it when on 40mg/day, but when they took it down to 10mg/day, the prescription said to take once a day. I'm now back up to 20mg, but still taking it once. The endo said the problem with splitting the dose is that people are more likely to miss doses - and I must admit, although I've been pretty good, when I have forgotten it's always been the second dose.
I've never had any problems, but you don't have to take them on an empty stomach, so maybe try taking them after breakfast.
