Whurling noise in left ear.

Hi All,

I am new here and for about 2 months I have been experiencing a whurling and whoosing noise in my left ear and its constant its like a heart beat and at night when I am trying to settle for bed it gets louder and louder and I am unable to sleep. I have been to the drs and she thought it was an infection behind my eardrum and gave me antibiotics and a nasal spray antibiotic. This didnt work so she gave me a stronger dose and again nothing. The sound got louder so went back i was refered to an ent consultant and have been referred to have an audiolgy test which i have had and am awaiting 2 x ct scans!! The noise is really annoying. However I have noticed if i turn my head to the left or right the noise stops. Its so irritating has anyone ever had anything similar

Thanks

Yes I have had that happen, I don't know what causes it but it has always gone away on it's own. I've had it 3 times so far. It's definitely annoying. I also have constant ringing in my ears but I've had it for alot of years so have mostly gotten used to it

Do you have thyroid problem, especially Hashimoto's

If so get B12 and folate tested. Tinnitus can be symptom of low B12. Very common with thyroid issues

Also test vitamin D and ferritin too while there

Hi slowdragon,

I have had my thyroid checked in july 17 and it showed my thyroid as borderline, but because it always goes back normal its never been a prob. So i was retested in sept and it was back to normal but its always a diff outcome

Many patients who are "borderline" are actually hypo, usually with autoimmune thyroid disease

Would strongly suggest you get full testing

GP at best will have done TSH and FT4

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, both TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

Also do you take any med Like lanzaprole or omeprazole, any PPI for acid reflux ? acid reflux can when hypo be due to LOW stomach acid

Post I did yesterday about low acid and low B12

Hi Buzbi

Yes I have had this. Prior to diagnosis of Graves , I think my consultant called it ‘Pulsatile Tinnitus’ it definitely mirrored my heartbeat and I was more aware of it when lying in bed at night. Anyhow once my thyroid levels came down from dangerously high to a more regular level it totally disappeared. Although I am now ‘hypo’ after RAI, it has never returned but I do understand that it can be a hypo symptom too.

I always thought it sounded like I was hearing my blood whooshing around my body at a fast rate of knots. It probably was , I was so hyper!

Might be an idea to get thyroid bloods done.

Good luck and take care.

In my own case, I've found that if the noise alters with the position of my neck and head it's due to tight neck muscles and trigger points in the muscles. I get whooshing sounds in either one ear, or sometimes both, when my neck is very tight and I also get an off-balance feeling sometimes. Another way to test if it's caused by muscles is to jut out your lower jaw, if that makes the noise worse then it's caused by tight muscles around the jawline and front of neck. This may sound too simple but for me it's been the answer. A massage, gentle neck exercises, or a trip to an osteopath has always sorted it out for me, but the thing is to not let it get that bad to start with. Incidentally I was sent to various ENTs and specialists before my GP suggested it was all coming from my neck and sent me to a phyio who proved it! Of course the thyroid can also affect the tightness of muscles in this area but for me no tweaking of thyroid meds has made a difference, only direct treatment to the muscles.

Lots of information here:

That's brilliant, thank you.

I've it on and off for a while and it's been driving me mad. It felt like a muscle spasm in my ear. I mentioned it to my GP but he only asked if it felt as though it was deep inside my ear. Stretching my neck stopped it for a bit and when it came back it wasn't as bad.

I have had a couple of brief episodes of this in the past too. Thanks for mentioning it, I will not worry as much should it occur again. I thought at the times I might be hearing a aneurism!
