Generally, with antibiotics, it's advisable to also take probiotics, and prebiotics too, to rebalance the gut flora.
MountainMel,
You might try 100% gluten-free diet after Christmas and see whether that improves digestion and bowel movements. Some people get withdrawal symptoms for the first few days but they should resolve after a week or so. Try G-F for 3-4 weeks. If bloating and constipation improve and then disimprove when you reintroduce gluten you'll know you're sensitive to gluten and should adopt a g-f diet.
For me, I was tested for food intolerances years ago to see if they made a difference to oncoming arthritis. Top of my list were wheat and oats. The arthritis improved and I also found the bloating improved after I'd been off those for a few months (sorry not sure how many).
My recent discovery for constipation is mashed sweet potato. Really useful! Try it!
Many on the forum take digestive enzymes with meals or Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with juice or water. If hypo our digestion and everything else slows down.
By drinking plenty of water and gradually increasing fibre in the diet. Also gradually increasing gentle exercise (walking or swimming).
Avoiding foods such as : cheese, eggs, white bread, marshmallows; large meat portions. Gassy veg eg cauliflower, sprouts.
Increasing fresh fruit ie - 3 a day eg banana, apple, pear: also root veg eg a potato every day plus others.
Pelvic Floor Exercises.
Or/and increase fibre intake with daily Fybogels.xx
Magnesium helps with constipation, try 400mg per day, away from your meds, to start. For bloating and fluid retention going carb free has been completely effective, but don't attempt this until after Christmas!! Google ketogenic diet for more info.
I've read the other replies about constipation, but mine goes away when I am property medicated. Have you had your levels tested?
Hi I used to suffer terribly. Tried all sorts of diets and remedies. I started T4/T3 combo 6 months ago and NDT 2 months ago and I’ve had no problems since.
Could you give me a little more info about what you are actually taking? I have only been diagnosed a few months and am not too familiar with the drugs. All I take is Levothyroxine
Hi I was on Levo then in October moved to Natural Desiccated Thyroid. I self medicate with NDT, it’s not available on the NHS Its worth reading stop the thyroid madness or other NDT sites x
